These heart-shaped Valentine hot chocolate bombs are a delightful and festive treat for the holiday—perfect for gifting or savoring at home.
I recently discovered hot chocolate bombs and fell in love with how fun and cozy they are. Inspired by heart-shaped silicone molds, I adapted a basic hot chocolate bomb technique into a Valentine’s Day version that’s as charming as it is delicious.

Ingredients and supplies

- Silicone heart-shaped mold (each cavity about 1.2 inches deep is ideal)
- 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips, divided
- 2 teaspoons butter, divided
- Hot chocolate mix (about 12 tablespoons total)
- Mini marshmallows (about 1/2 cup)
- Pink and red candies (Smarties or M&Ms)
- 2 squares baker’s white chocolate (for drizzling)
- Sprinkles for decoration
Step-by-step instructions
- Melt chocolate: Place 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips and 1 teaspoon butter in a microwave-safe bowl. Heat in 20–30 second intervals, stirring between intervals, until the chocolate is completely melted and smooth.
- Coat the molds: Using a spoon, spread a thin, even layer of melted chocolate across the bottoms and sides of each heart cavity. This recipe yields about four heart-shaped bombs. Make sure there are no thin spots so the shells don’t break when removed.
- Chill: Place the coated molds in the freezer for at least 15 minutes, or until the chocolate is fully set.
- Fill the shells: Once the chocolate has hardened, add about 3 tablespoons of hot chocolate mix into each heart, along with a few mini marshmallows and a handful of pink and red candies. Pack the filling so it comes nearly to the top of each cavity.
- Seal the bombs: Melt the remaining 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate with the last teaspoon of butter the same way as before. Spoon melted chocolate over each filled mold to create a sealed bottom. Smooth the surface so the bombs look finished.
- Final chill: Return the molds to the freezer for another 10–15 minutes, until solid.
- Unmold and decorate: Gently peel the heart-shaped bombs from the silicone molds. Melt the baker’s white chocolate in a small resealable bag or bowl, snip a tiny corner of the bag, and pipe a drizzle of white chocolate over the top of each heart. Add sprinkles immediately—the drizzle hardens quickly.

How to use a hot chocolate bomb
Place one heart-shaped bomb in a large mug. Pour hot milk (or hot water, if you prefer) directly over the bomb. Watch the chocolate shell melt and the marshmallows and candies pour out into the mug. Stir well to combine and enjoy a rich, festive cup of hot cocoa.

Storage and gifting
Store finished hot chocolate bombs in the refrigerator in an airtight container, or wrap each one individually in clear cellophane for gifting. These make a lovely homemade Valentine—pair one with a small card for a simple, heartfelt present.

Tips and notes
- Work quickly when drizzling white chocolate and adding sprinkles, since the drizzle sets fast.
- If your silicone mold cavities are shallower or deeper than 1.2 inches, adjust the filling amount so the seal sticks properly.
- For an extra special touch, use flavored hot cocoa mix, peppermint pieces, or flavored candies in the center.
- If you prefer a smoother shell, temper the chocolate or use high-quality melting wafers designed for molding.
