Ornament Painting Day: Chalkboard-Style Holiday Decorations
Today I spent the day painting holiday ornaments, surrounded by cheerful Christmas music. The house felt warm and festive, and I couldn’t help but imagine Santa arriving any minute. It was one of those creative, cozy days where everything comes together: supplies at the ready, a favorite playlist on repeat, and a stack of wooden ornament blanks waiting to be transformed.

My husband cut these circular ornaments on the scroll saw, giving each piece a clean, rustic shape that works beautifully with the chalkboard finish I’ve been experimenting with. The chalkboard-style paint creates a matte, vintage-friendly backdrop that lets painted lettering and simple floral accents stand out. This look is perfect for those who love handmade holiday décor with a touch of farmhouse charm.
Some ornaments feature the word “Joy” hand-painted in a soft, classic script. The contrast of crisp white paint against the dark chalkboard base makes the lettering pop, creating ornaments that feel both timeless and contemporary. These pieces work well on a traditional tree, incorporated into gift wrapping, or used as small hanging tags around the home for a cohesive seasonal look.

Other ornaments are decorated with delicate white flowers painted freehand. These floral motifs are intentionally simple—small blossoms and leaves that lend an elegant, handmade quality without being overly fussy. The result is a collection of ornaments that feels balanced: festive yet understated, rustic yet refined.

If you’re looking for ornaments to add a personal touch to your holiday décor, I’ve listed several pieces in my Etsy shop and I’ll be bringing some to the upcoming Christmas Craft Tour. These handmade ornaments make thoughtful stocking stuffers, small hostess gifts, or a unique addition to your tree this season. Quantities are limited since each piece is hand-painted and finished individually.
Alongside the ornaments, I recently listed a small batch of vintage linen sachets. These soft, scented sachets are filled and finished by hand, offering a subtle, nostalgic fragrance for drawers, closets, or small spaces around the home. The combination of linen texture and gentle scent complements the handmade ornaments nicely for shoppers seeking cohesive holiday gifts and home accents.

I’m excited about a new Christmas series I’ll be sharing on the blog soon. The series will include step-by-step how-tos for creating these chalkboard-style ornaments, guidance on materials and tools, and tips for painting lettering and floral designs. My goal is to make the process approachable for crafters at any skill level, whether you’re a beginner hoping to try your first ornament or an experienced maker looking for fresh inspiration.
For now, I’m savoring a productive, festive Monday—paint-splattered fingers and all. If you’ve started decorating or playing holiday music already, I’d love to hear about it. Do you have a favorite Christmas song that gets you in the crafting mood? Or a go-to ornament style you return to each year?
Wishing you a creative and joyful holiday season as you plan your decorations and gift-making. Keep an eye on the blog for the upcoming DIY series, and enjoy the simple pleasures of handmade holiday décor.
