Christmas Living Room Tour
Last week I shared our Christmas Dining Room, where most of the holiday decorating lives. Today I wanted to take you on a relaxed tour of the rest of the large living room so you can see how the space feels when it’s all ready for the season. I kept the overall palette simple—black, white, and gold—with layers of texture to create a cozy, inviting atmosphere for holiday gatherings.

I swapped the new accent rug I’d been using for a black-and-cream striped rug I picked up around the same time. The stripes anchor the seating area and add a modern graphic element that complements the softer, more traditional holiday accents.

While working on the One Room Challenge, I was already leaning toward a black, white, and gold color story for the holidays. Sticking to a restrained palette makes it easier to layer natural elements—pinecones, greenery, and vintage ornament finishes—without the room feeling busy.
The built-in Billy bookcases became a focal point for seasonal styling. They’re a perfect place to weave in small festive touches: stacks of old books for height variation, a few framed prints, and clusters of ornaments and greenery to create points of interest at different eye levels.

Using vintage and well-loved books helps break up the rows of spines and introduces warm, muted tones. I arrange the books both vertically and horizontally to build layers, then top horizontal stacks with small ornaments or natural elements to add charm and dimension.

Personal touches make the room feel like home. Little ornaments my mom gave each of our boys are tucked into the shelves and displayed on side tables—small sentimental items like these tell stories and make holiday decor feel meaningful rather than purely decorative.

Pinecones, faux greenery, and textured accents are sprinkled throughout to add tactile interest. Mixing natural shapes and faux elements keeps the look cohesive and seasonally appropriate without overwhelming the neutral foundation of the room.

The old window hanging on the wall got a simple wreath to add a focal holiday detail without crowding the vignette. On the side table, an enamelware bowl filled with vintage ornaments brings a touch of nostalgia and a soft metallic glow amid the neutrals.

At this time of year the light is soft and dark most of the day. I shot these photos at 1:00 p.m. and ended up turning on every lamp to get bright, balanced images. That dim, cozy daylight is perfect for candles, though: we’ve been lighting tea lights and pillar candles on the coffee table and letting them burn through the evening to create a warm, gentle glow throughout the room.

Having lived for many years with a wood stove, I’m drawn to the feeling of a small, steady flame. Even when there’s no real fire, candlelight and a cluster of lights on shelves can evoke that same comforting mood and make the living room feel like a snug retreat on chilly afternoons.
That wraps up this little living room Christmas tour. If you missed the dining room tour, you can find it in the earlier post linked above.
