What I Wore: Stylish Outfits for Women Over 40

How I Learned to Love Ankle Boots and Simple Outfit Tricks

I remember when ankle boots first appeared on the scene. At the time I thought they looked unusual and a bit awkward. But after seeing them paired with countless outfits, I gradually warmed to the look — and eventually I jumped right in with both feet (pun intended).

Why ankle boots work for everyday wear

After doing a lot of reading and looking at street style photos, I discovered ankle boots are surprisingly versatile. They often pair best with narrow or fitted pant legs — think skinny jeans, tapered trousers, or even ankle-length slim pants — but they can also look great with skirts and dresses when balanced with the right proportions.

Personally, I’m into jeans these days, so that’s my go-to pairing. The combination is simple and comfortable, which is essential for me. A slim jean that hits just above the boot makes the silhouette look clean, and an ankle boot with a modest heel or flat sole keeps the outfit practical for everyday wear.

On the half-tuck trend

Another trend I’ve noticed and tried is the half-tuck — tucking just the front of your top into the waistband and leaving the rest loose. It’s supposed to create a casual, effortless look and can help define the waist without the stiffness of a full tuck.

I’m attempting to embrace the half-tuck. I really am. Truthfully, it feels a little odd sometimes and seems to last only a few seconds before I want to smooth it out again. But when it works, it gives an outfit a relaxed, modern edge — particularly with sweaters, button-downs, and slightly oversized tops.

Practical styling tips I use

  • Balance proportions: If you wear bulkier boots, choose slimmer pants. If your top is oversized, keep the bottom more fitted.
  • Mind the hem: Cropped jeans that show a sliver of ankle above the boot or hit right at the top of the boot tend to look the most flattering.
  • Layer thoughtfully: A long coat or cardigan can elongate your silhouette; a shorter jacket can emphasize the waist.
  • Stick to neutral palettes for easy mixing: Black, brown, gray, navy, and denim make it simple to pair pieces without much thought.

Photography and taking outfit photos

One regular question I get is how I take my outfit photos. I find it surprisingly difficult, especially with focus and framing. I use a tripod when I can, but even then I struggle with getting the right distance and focus. If you have tips, please send them — I’d love to hear your best tricks for clear, well-composed self-portraits.

Some things that help me when I set up a self-portrait: pick a location with even natural light, choose a clean background, use a timer or remote shutter, and take a few test shots to check focus and composition before committing to the full set. Small movements and adjustments make a big difference.

What I’d love to see from you

Tell me what outfits you’re enjoying these days. Better yet, set up your tripod, snap a photo, and send it my way. I love seeing how other people style similar pieces — especially ankle boots — and how they make trends work for their everyday lives.

Maybe someday I’ll share some outtakes from my own photo sessions; they can be rather entertaining. Until then, experiment with proportions, try the half-tuck if you’re curious, and keep comfort as a priority. That’s the best route to outfits you’ll actually want to wear.
