Recently I shared a look at bedrooms featuring dark accent walls that have been inspiring our next update. Those images came from research for an upcoming makeover I’m excited to show you more of: our Master Bedroom Makeover.
All room projects evolve as they progress, but this time I began by creating a clear mood board to guide decisions, keep costs down, and help repurpose what we already own.
A Farmhouse Boho Bedroom Makeover Begins
Master Bedroom Makeover—Before
When we moved into this townhouse, the master bedroom was a simple, builder-grade beige box. A few years ago we completed a very budget-friendly mini makeover, painting most walls in Simply White and adding a feature wall in Silver Strand to brighten the space.
That update made a big difference, but now we want to give the room more personality, texture, and a cohesive style that reflects both farmhouse warmth and boho softness.
Our goals for this project are straightforward:
- Add more personality with a modern farmhouse boho aesthetic.
- Create space for sleeker, smaller bedside tables by relocating clothing into the closet.
- Improve small closet organization to reduce clutter and increase storage efficiency.
- Complete the refresh on a modest budget by reusing and repurposing items we already own whenever possible.
The Plan
I’m calling the concept “Modern Farmhouse meets Boho.” It blends the clean, inviting lines of modern farmhouse design with the layered textures, natural materials, and relaxed vibe of boho style. This mix allows for an eclectic, lived-in look while maintaining overall cohesion.
Key components of the plan include a strong feature wall, layered textiles, mixed metals, greenery, and modern art to balance the organic elements. Below I outline the core elements we’ll focus on as we move through the makeover.
Elements of the Modern Farmhouse Boho Master Bedroom
From studying bedrooms that appeal to me, these consistent elements emerged as essentials for achieving the look:
- Dark colored feature wall: We plan to use the paint Iron Mountain for a dramatic backdrop. We already have some leftover from other rooms, and it pairs beautifully with Simply White to create depth without overpowering the space.
- Warm natural textures and brown tones: Woven baskets, stained wood, leather pillows, and chunky-knit throws add tactile warmth. Macramé wall hangings and hanging planters can bring artisan boho charm without feeling fussy.
- Gold and black metals: Mixing warm gold accents with black metal elements—particularly on lamps and hardware—adds contrast and a modern edge against the darker wall.
- Greenery: Both live plants and high-quality faux greenery help the room feel fresh and welcoming. Plants soften lines and introduce subtle color.
- Simple, modern art: I’ve been drawn to minimal landscape pieces lately. Clean-lined artwork complements the layered textures and keeps the overall look contemporary.
The goal is to layer these features thoughtfully so the room feels curated rather than crowded. We’ll prioritize swapping bulky nightstands for streamlined options, reorganizing the closet to free up space, and incorporating repurposed decor to stretch the budget.
