Jute Rolling Pin Holder for Kitchen Storage

Those ladies have done it again! Five bloggers have joined forces to host a monthly Mission Possible link party, and when I browsed through the creative entries this month I couldn’t resist joining in. Smile The theme for this round is “It’s a Cinch,” which is all about quick, simple, and clever ideas and tutorials—perfect for easy DIY home decor.

Because the theme emphasizes fast and easy projects, I wanted to share one of the quickest little decor ideas I’ve picked up recently. It’s inexpensive, functional, and adds a touch of vintage charm to any craft space or kitchen.

A blank wall in my new craft room needed something interesting, and a page from a Pottery Barn catalogue provided the spark. The image featured several charming accessories, but the rolling pin mounted at the top center grabbed my attention; what a clever way to display and store twine.

Inspired by that idea, I decided to make my own version using an old rolling pin that belonged to my grandmother. The pin still turns smoothly on its handles, which made it ideal for holding and dispensing jute or twine. This project is essentially a revamp of a common household item into a clever storage solution.

The technique is delightfully simple. I anchored one end of the jute against the rolling pin and spun the pin with my free hand, wrapping several layers until the jute was evenly distributed across the barrel. This wrapped barrel creates a neat, textured look while keeping the twine accessible.

Next, I secured extra lengths of jute around each handle to form sturdy hanging loops and knotted the ends to prevent slipping. Rather than buying new hooks, I repurposed old porcelain electrical conduit insulators (the kind with ceramic finishes) as decorative wall mounts. They offer a vintage-industrial look while functioning perfectly as hangers.

To add a small, practical accent, I strung a short length of jute beneath the pin to create a mini clothesline. Clothespins hold favorite paint swatches, inspiring color samples, or small notes—making the display useful as well as decorative. This configuration works wonderfully in a craft room, mudroom, or even a kitchen where you might want quick access to twine or ribbon.

There’s a bonus to this display beyond its looks: it’s practical. The wrapped jute unwinds smoothly when you pull an end, so the rolling pin doubles as a functional dispenser. It’s an excellent solution for crafters who use twine, ribbon, or baker’s string regularly, and it keeps the work surface tidy while maintaining instant access to supplies.

If you want to recreate this project, here’s a quick materials and tips list for a successful DIY rolling pin twine holder:

  • Materials: an old rolling pin (wooden, with turning handles works best), jute or twine, small clothespins, two decorative wall hooks or porcelain insulators, screws and wall anchors appropriate for your wall type.
  • Tips: Wind the jute evenly for a balanced look; tie secure loops on the handles for hanging; mount the hooks level and spaced to match the length of the rolling pin; add a short jute clothesline below for swatches or notes.
  • Variations: Use colored twine for a pop of color, swap the rolling pin for a dowel or curtain rod, or install multiple pins for different types of twine or ribbon storage.

This small, inexpensive project adds character and functionality in under an hour, and it’s a great example of upcycling a sentimental object into practical decor. I’m linking this idea to the “Mission Possible” concept of quick, high-impact projects—simple, clever, and absolutely achievable.
