How to Use Small Kitchen Remodel Ideas to Make You Love Your Kitchen Again
1. Start by dreaming, but prioritize function
It’s easy to get carried away imagining a total overhaul, but in a small kitchen a single change can quickly escalate into a costly renovation. If a full remodel isn’t in the budget, focus first on practical improvements that improve how the room functions day to day. Small, targeted updates can make a big difference in how much you enjoy the space right now.
Like many homeowners, I wanted the kitchen to be a place I looked forward to spending time in — without spending thousands. So I opted for low-cost, high-impact changes that improved the look and usability of the room.
For reference, our previous kitchen makeover demonstrated how a few thoughtful updates can transform a space:

A new, brighter paint color and a small built-in coffee station made the kitchen feel instantly more pleasant and purposeful.

Those small changes held up well over time and kept the space feeling fresh.
2. Define what you want to change and why
Before any makeover, list the specific pain points you want to address. For my kitchen the two main issues were:
- The space felt dark and uninviting, making me want to leave the kitchen as soon as possible.
- Baking and prep felt cramped because all the baking supplies were tucked into a tiny corner.
Identifying these problems helped me choose changes that would improve everyday use, not just aesthetics.
3. Use color to expand and brighten
Color is one of the most dramatic and budget-friendly ways to change a small kitchen. I chose Simply White by Benjamin Moore to match much of our home, and because a lighter color immediately makes a tight space feel larger and brighter. I already had a spare can on hand, so this was essentially a no-cost refresh.

It took several coats to cover the old color, but the result was worth it. I also removed an unsightly duct for the stove fan we never used, which cleaned up the visual clutter and simplified the look.
4. Rearrange to maximize storage and workflow
Sometimes the simplest change is a smarter layout. I moved my baking supplies to the largest work surface so I no longer had to cram myself into a tiny corner to bake. Shifting appliances and supplies to create a comfortable work zone makes daily tasks easier and more enjoyable.

After the change I had room to use the mixer and prepare food without feeling squashed.

Refresh the decor with purposeful styling
Open shelves above the coffee maker became an opportunity for both storage and personality. I styled them in a boho-modern way with wood accents and a few curated pieces to bring warmth to the black-and-white palette.

Adding a small art print behind items on the shelf and incorporating wooden boards and bowls introduced texture and a cozy cottage feel.

Houseplants on the windowsill and shelves add life, color, and even fresh herbs within reach.

These budget-friendly updates—paint, reorganization, open shelving, a bit of styling, and plants—created a fresh new look without removing walls, cabinets, or countertops.
