I didn’t grow up with tarts coming out of my mother’s oven, but in Canada butter tarts are everywhere—found in grocery bakeries year-round and often a highlight on holiday dessert trays. This version is based on a family recipe and uses frozen tart shells to make the process fast and foolproof. The filling comes together in a single bowl, and the results are irresistibly gooey, buttery, and slightly crunchy from the pecans.

Why You’ll Love These Butter Tarts

A timeless Canadian dessert you can make in your own kitchen

Store-bought tart shells make these quick and hassle-free

Filling mixes in one bowl in minutes

Gooey brown sugar center with a buttery flavor and pecan crunch

Great for holiday cookie trays, potlucks, or a cozy dessert at home

Ingredients for Pecan Butter Tarts

Full recipe measurements and instructions are included below so you can print or follow along easily.

12 frozen tart shells (such as Tenderflake), thawed according to package directions

1/4 cup chopped pecans

1 large egg

1/2 cup packed brown sugar

1/4 cup light corn syrup

1/4 cup (4 tablespoons) melted butter

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/8 teaspoon salt

Pecan Butter Tarts

Yield: 12 tarts

Prep time: 10 minutes

Cook time: 15 minutes

Total time: about 55 minutes (including thawing and cooling)

These pecan butter tarts feature a gooey brown-sugar filling baked in store-bought tart shells for a fast, traditional Canadian treat. They’re ideal for holiday baking, potlucks, or a sweet afternoon pick-me-up.

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Thaw the frozen tart shells according to the package directions (usually about 10 minutes). Arrange them on the prepared baking sheet.

Divide the chopped pecans evenly among the tart shells, sprinkling them into the bottom of each shell.

In a medium bowl, lightly beat the egg. Add the brown sugar, corn syrup, melted butter, vanilla, and salt. Whisk until the mixture is smooth and no brown-sugar lumps remain.

Using a cookie scoop or spoon, carefully fill each tart shell with the filling, distributing it evenly over the pecans. Expect a few drips; that’s normal.

Bake for about 15 minutes, until the pastry is lightly golden and the filling is bubbly. Baking time can vary depending on how thawed the tart shells are; if they were still slightly frozen, they may need a few extra minutes.

Remove the tarts from the oven and transfer the pan to a wire rack. Cool completely before attempting to remove tarts from their foil pans so the filling has time to set.

Notes

Raisin variation: Replace the pecans with raisins for a traditional raisin butter tart. Some bakers soak raisins in hot water for a few minutes to plump them up, then drain before adding.

Cooling is important: Let the tarts cool fully before removing from pans; the filling firms up as it cools.

Freezing: Butter tarts freeze well. Freeze cooled tarts in a single layer, then transfer to a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months. Thaw on the counter before serving.

Step-by-Step Overview

In summary: thaw shells, scatter pecans in each shell, mix the filling in one bowl, scoop into shells, bake until golden and bubbly, then cool completely. The whole process is straightforward and ideal for bakers of all skill levels.

Sprinkle pecans, mix filling, and scoop into tart shells.

How to Store and Freeze Butter Tarts

Good news: These tarts are great for making ahead and freeze nicely, which makes them a convenient holiday or party dessert.

Counter: Store cooled tarts in an airtight container at room temperature for 2–3 days.

Refrigerator: Keep covered for up to one week.

Freezer: Freeze cooled tarts in a single layer, then pack into a freezer-safe container or bag for up to 3 months. Thaw on the counter before serving.

Helpful Tips

Beat the filling until the brown sugar is fully dissolved and the mixture is smooth—no grainy lumps.

A cookie scoop keeps portions consistent and reduces mess when filling shells.

Bake on parchment for easy cleanup and to protect your baking sheet from spills.

Allow tarts to cool completely before removing from pans so the centers set and won’t spill.

Substitutions and Variations

Raisins: Classic raisin butter tarts replace nuts with raisins—soaked or unsoaked, depending on preference.

Different nuts: Use walnuts or a nut-free version by omitting nuts entirely.

Homemade pastry: If you prefer, use your own pastry instead of store-bought shells for a fully homemade tart.

How to Serve Butter Tarts

Serve at room temperature with coffee or tea for a cozy treat.

Add them to a holiday dessert tray alongside other classic sweets.

For an indulgent dessert, serve slightly warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Other Classic Desserts to Try

No-bake layered bars with a crumb base and chocolate topping (a Canadian favorite)

Rich, classic chocolate fudge for holiday gift-giving

Butterscotch brownies—sweet, chewy, and quick to make

Soft, chewy cookies with toffee or caramel bits for an extra texture boost

These butter tarts are quick to prepare and reliably delicious. Using frozen tart shells lets you enjoy a homemade dessert without the fuss of rolling pastry—perfect for gifting, entertaining, or simply treating yourself.

This Frito corn salad recipe is creamy, crunchy, and incredibly quick to prepare—ready in about five minutes. It’s a fantastic make-ahead side dish for barbecues, potlucks, picnics, or any casual gathering where you want something tasty and fuss-free.

I discovered this version of the salad on a recent family road trip. My sister served a bowl of what our relatives fondly call “Lorrie’s corn salad,” and I was instantly hooked. It’s one of those simple family classics—easy to make, made from common pantry ingredients, and always a crowd-pleaser.

Back home, I recreated the salad and adjusted the amounts to share here. The bright mix of corn, diced peppers and onions, shredded cheese, and a creamy binder is delightful on its own, and the Frito chips provide a satisfying crunch when added just before serving. For best flavor, make the salad ahead and refrigerate so the ingredients can meld. Keep the chips separate until serving to preserve their crispness.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

Ready in about five minutes—no cooking required.

Make-ahead friendly: saves time on the day of the event.

Versatile side that pairs well with grilled meats, sandwiches, and picnic fare.

Simple ingredients you likely already have in your pantry or fridge.

Crowd-pleasing texture: creamy base with crunchy corn chips added at the end.

Fritos Corn Salad

Yield: 8 servings | Prep Time: 5 minutes | Total Time: 5 minutes

A creamy, crunchy corn salad loaded with cheese, diced peppers, and crushed Frito chips—an easy no-cook side that’s perfect for potlucks, picnics, and backyard barbecues.

Ingredients

2 cans corn, drained

1 red pepper, diced

1/2 red onion, diced

2 cups shredded cheese

1 cup mayonnaise or Miracle Whip

1 small bag Frito chips (plain or chili cheese flavor)

Instructions

Drain the canned corn thoroughly and transfer it to a large mixing bowl.

Dice the red pepper and red onion so the pieces are similar in size to the corn kernels (or slightly smaller).

Add the diced red pepper, red onion, and shredded cheese to the bowl with the corn.

Stir in the mayonnaise (or Miracle Whip) until everything is evenly coated.

Cover and refrigerate. For best flavor, prepare the salad the day before and chill overnight to let the flavors meld.

Just before serving, stir in the Frito chips so they remain crisp. Alternatively, set the chips out on the side and let guests crush and add them individually.

Notes, Tips & Variations

If Fritos are unavailable, toasted corn chips make an excellent substitute. If you don’t have a red pepper on hand, green pepper will work as well, though the flavor and color will differ slightly. To add brightness, try a squeeze of lime juice or a handful of chopped cilantro. For a little heat, stir in diced jalapeño or a pinch of chili powder. Black beans or fresh diced tomato can be added to make the salad heartier.

To keep the salad from becoming soggy, always add the chips right before serving. If you expect leftovers, store the salad without chips in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3–4 days; add fresh chips when serving again.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Frito Corn Salad

Drain the canned corn well and place it in a large bowl.

Dice the red pepper and red onion to match the size of the corn kernels.

Combine corn, pepper, onion, shredded cheese, and mayonnaise (or Miracle Whip). Mix until evenly coated.

Cover and refrigerate. For best results, prepare the salad the day before to allow flavors to develop.

Right before serving, fold in a small bag of Frito chips, or provide the chips on the side for guests to add and crush themselves.

Quick note: If Fritos aren’t available in your area, store-bought toasted corn chips or other plain corn chips work well and give the same satisfying crunch.

Budget-Friendly DIY Pendant Light Makeover

While shopping for a light to hang above the kitchen sink, I kept thinking about some of the stylish fixtures I’d seen recently. Two of my favorites were from Restoration Hardware: the Vintage Barn Light (listed at $299–$399) and the Vintage Streetlight (listed at $329–$549).

Knowing what I liked helped me recognize a great bargain when I saw it: a vintage-looking pendant at my local Restore, Habitat for Humanity’s building-supply thrift shop. It was an easy buy.

The fixture itself was inexpensive—just $8.00—and came with a dated gold chain and wiring. I forgot to photograph it before disassembly, so picture the original finish as gold-toned. When I showed the piece to our electrician, his delighted reaction was priceless; he hesitated, then praised the find. He did, however, strongly recommend replacing the old wiring and the porcelain socket. Inside the canopy someone had written “porcelain socket replaced 1983,” which made it clear the electrical parts needed updating.

My husband handled the electrical work, replacing the wiring and the socket while I prepped the metal parts for paint. Before spraying, I masked the interior carefully: I covered the entire white inside with paper taped down using painter’s tape so no paint would sneak onto the interior surface or the threads where the socket sits. This simple masking step ensured a clean finish and preserved the inner surfaces where light reflects best.

To make painting easier, I propped the individual pieces on a glass jar and an empty coffee tin. These improvised stands let me rotate parts and spray all sides without touching the wet paint. Working in thin, even coats helped avoid drips and produced a smooth finish.

I sprayed the fixture with an oil-rubbed bronze color in a satin finish, applying several light layers rather than one heavy coat. I decided not to prime first and was pleased with the result; the paint adhered well and left a consistent finish. If you prefer extra durability, a light scuff sanding or a primer designed for metal can be used before painting, but I kept the process simple and it worked for this piece.

After the electrical updates and the paint cured, I reassembled the light and hung it over the sink. The finished pendant has a modern farmhouse feel and blends nicely with my kitchen without the high price tag of designer fixtures.

If you like numbers, here’s the cost breakdown for my makeover:

Found light at the Restore: $8.00

Spray paint: already on hand

New electrical parts (wiring, porcelain socket, and any small supplies): $8.25 (including taxes)

Total spent on the project: $16.25. That’s a dramatic savings compared with the higher-priced options I had in mind, and the result looks custom and cohesive in the space.

DIY tips from this project:

Inspect vintage or thrifted fixtures closely for previous electrical work and replace any old wiring or sockets. Safety first.

Mask interior surfaces thoroughly with paper and painter’s tape to prevent unwanted overspray.

Use improvised stands (jars, tins) to paint pieces without touching wet surfaces; rotate parts for even coverage.

Apply spray paint in multiple thin coats, allowing adequate drying time between layers for a smooth finish.

Long before Marie Kondo became widely known for her Netflix series “Tidying Up,” her book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up introduced the KonMari method and reshaped how many people think about home organization and decluttering.

It’s a concise, practical read that offers straightforward tips and a clear process for tackling clutter. If you don’t have time to read the whole book right now, this summary outlines the core ideas and how they helped me when we dramatically downsized our home and reorganized our entire small house.

I strongly recommend the book if you want a complete guide. In the meantime, here is a practical synopsis of the KonMari approach and tips to get started today.

The Basics of the KonMari Method

Note: This post contains product and method recommendations based on personal experience.

The KonMari method recommends handling tidying as a focused, systematic event rather than an open-ended chore.

1. Treat tidying as a focused event — aim for completeness, not drips and drabs.

“The secret of success is to tidy in one shot, as quickly and completely as possible, and to start by discarding.” — Marie Kondo

The KonMari philosophy frames tidying as a special event you complete thoroughly in a relatively short period of time, rather than an endless, piecemeal task. That was liberating to me: the idea that a real, lasting change is possible when you commit to a focused effort.

That said, the “one shot” approach still requires planning and time. For our downsized home, I organized by focusing on one area each week and completed the process over a few focused weeks. The key is consistency and the mindset that you will finish a category before moving on.

KonMari works by sorting items by category. Craft supplies fall under “komono,” the miscellaneous category.

2. Sort by category in a specific order to build decision-making confidence.

“By starting with the easy things first and leaving the hardest for last, you can gradually hone your decision-making skills, so that by the end, it seems simple.” — Marie Kondo

Instead of cleaning room by room, KonMari recommends gathering items by category so you can see everything of the same type at once. The suggested order — starting with clothes and finishing with sentimental items — is designed to make decision-making easier as you progress.

This approach revealed surprising excesses in our home: when all like items were brought together, it was obvious what we had too much of. For example, seeing all the tea light candles at once was an eye-opener. When you can compare like with like, choices become clearer and faster.

When you keep only the items that truly “spark joy,” rooms stay simpler and easier to maintain.

3. Decide by feeling: keep what “sparks joy” but use practical judgment too.

“The best way to choose what to keep and what to throw away is to take each item in one’s hand and ask: ‘Does this spark joy?’ If it does, keep it. If not, dispose of it.” — Marie Kondo

At first, the “spark joy” test sounds unusual and even amusing. In practice, it’s a useful tool for focusing the decision process. I combined it with practical questions such as “How often do I use this?” and “Does this item support the life I want to live?”

Not everything needs to spark joy — some items are purely functional (a toilet brush, for example) — but asking whether an item has value to you makes the choice between keep and discard more intentional. This mindset helped us pare down kitchen supplies, reducing duplicates and keeping only what we actually use.

Give the KonMari method a try

Marie Kondo’s The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up is one of my top two favorite books on home organization.

If you’re curious, read Marie Kondo’s book to get the full method. It’s practical and motivating. If you prefer to start immediately, create your own printable checklist and work through categories in the order below, tackling one category at a time and setting aside uninterrupted time to complete it.

Start organizing with the KonMari categories

A simple checklist helps you stay focused as you declutter and organize each category.

Work in the recommended order to build confidence and momentum:

Clothing

Books

Papers

Komono (miscellaneous: craft supplies, kitchen items, personal items, linens, etc.)

Sentimental items

Tips for success: dedicate an uninterrupted block of time for each category, gather every item in the category so you can compare them, and hold each piece before deciding. Be honest about use and feeling — the goal is a more intentional, livable home.

Sweet n Sour Chicken Meal for 55

Today’s Dinner Menu:

Sweet and Sour Chicken

Rice

Mixed Green Salad (served with a choice of 3 dressings)

Fresh Bread

Carrot Cake

Prep the day before:

Prepare two boxes of skinless, boneless chicken breasts the day before service. Arrange the breasts on baking sheets, season lightly if desired, and bake until cooked through—generally about 20–30 minutes at 375°F (190°C), depending on breast size. Allow the chicken to cool, then dice into bite-sized pieces and transfer to two shallow hotel pans. Cover each pan tightly with foil or lids and refrigerate overnight. This make-ahead step speeds service the next day and helps the flavors meld when the sauce is added.

Tips for make-ahead success:

Label pans with the date and contents for kitchen organization.

If you expect variable portion sizes, keep extra cooked chicken on standby in a sealed container in the cooler.

For a slightly juicier result, avoid overbaking the breasts during the initial cook; they will finish in the sauce the next day.

On the day of:

Prepare the sweet and sour sauce and vegetables, assemble the pans, and finish in the oven. The following method yields a thick, chunky sauce that pairs well with rice and a simple salad.

Sweet and Sour Sauce:

12 cups ketchup

4 cups cider vinegar

2 cups brown sugar

3 teaspoons black pepper

Salt to taste

To this base, add:

Chunked red bell peppers

Chunked yellow bell peppers

Chunked green bell peppers

Sliced carrots

Diced onions

Method:

In a large steam kettle or heavy stockpot, combine the ketchup, cider vinegar and brown sugar. Whisk together and bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat.

Add the black pepper and a pinch of salt, then taste and adjust seasoning as needed.

Stir in the diced onions, sliced carrots, and the mixed bell peppers. Simmer until the vegetables are tender-crisp and the sauce has reduced slightly into a thick, chunky consistency. If you prefer softer carrots, steam or par-cook them briefly before adding to the sauce.

When the sauce is ready, divide it evenly between the two hotel pans that contain the cooked, diced chicken. Gently toss or stir in each pan so the chicken is well coated and the vegetables are distributed throughout.

Cover the pans tightly with foil and place them in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C). Bake for about 1 hour and 15 minutes, or until the contents are hot and bubbly throughout. Stir once partway through baking if possible to ensure even heating.

Check for doneness by sampling the center to ensure the chicken is heated through and the sauce has thickened to your liking. Once finished, remove from oven and let rest a few minutes before serving.

Serving suggestions:

Serve the sweet and sour chicken over steamed white or brown rice to soak up the sauce.

Offer a mixed green salad with three dressing choices on the side to provide a fresh contrast to the rich sauce.

Fresh bread is a welcome addition for guests who prefer to accompany the meal with a roll.

Finish the meal with slices of carrot cake as a sweet, complementary dessert.

Storage and leftovers:

Cool leftovers promptly and store in airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to 3–4 days.

For longer storage, freeze the chicken and sauce separately in portioned containers; thaw thoroughly before reheating.

Reheat gently on the stovetop or in a steam kettle until steaming hot throughout.

{It was delicious! If you prefer the carrots less crunchy when the dish is finished, steam them briefly before adding to the sauce.}

Front Patio Refresh: New Tree and Flower Bed Makeover

We finally had a stretch of bright blue sky and warm sunshine, and it felt great to get outside and tackle a few long-awaited projects on the front patio. After a season of wind and a storm that toppled a large tree near the patio, the yard needed some attention. Rather than dwell on the loss, we decided to replace the tree and refresh the surrounding flower beds.

Finding a replacement tree was a little surprising — I’d hoped for a Japanese maple, but the prices at the garden centers were higher than I expected. Fortunately we found a healthy young tree at a much better price, and it seemed perfect for the spot. Once planted, it immediately softened the area and restored the symmetry we’d lost.

The fallen tree had left roots and rocks scattered through the flower bed. Our first step was clearing debris, amending the soil, and preparing the beds so the new plants would have a healthy start. A bit of digging, raking, and fresh soil made a big difference.

Once the bed was prepared, we set the new tree into place and added a few companion shrubs and perennial flowers. Positioning the tree with attention to light, sight lines from the front door, and nearby plantings helped the whole arrangement feel intentional.

With the new tree in, the bed already feels calmer and more balanced. It’s rewarding to see the immediate visual improvement after a day’s work in the yard.

Another bed near the front had served well for spring bulbs, but it looked cluttered once the bulbs finished blooming. To tidy the area, we created a clean walking path matching the width of the neighboring bed, added fresh topsoil, and replanted a mix of new inexpensive flowers along with some established plants we relocated from other beds.

For the front edge I planted a cheerful row of purple and yellow pansies—plants that give a welcoming burst of color and will fill in quickly. Behind them we added sweet peas supported by a simple, handcrafted lattice to encourage vertical growth and create an attractive backdrop.

To build the lattice, our son trimmed some sturdy branches and we hammered them into the ground as vertical posts, then attached a horizontal top. We laced jute twine up the sides to provide climbing support for the sweet peas. The rustic, natural look suits the house and gives the vines something to cling to as they grow.

Here are full views of the beds before and after the update. The difference is immediate: tidy edges, fresh soil, and coordinated plantings make the entrance much more inviting. The beds will continue to settle and fill in over the coming weeks as the new plants take root.

Overall, the little patio makeover restored balance to our front yard and gave us a fresh, welcoming view from the front door. A few practical tips from this project: clear debris thoroughly after storm damage, amend soil before planting, choose cost-effective plants to stretch your budget, and use simple supports like natural branch lattices for climbing flowers. There’s more to finish, but this phase already feels like a success—now to keep the weeds at bay and enjoy the blooms.

Putting up Christmas decorations is always fun, but deciding what to keep on the walls once the holidays end can feel tricky. A simple, stylish solution is to switch to Winter-themed wall decor using vintage botanical prints—free printable art that brings a calm, seasonal look without the overt holiday motifs.

Below I’ll show an easy, fast approach to refresh a decorated space for Winter using vintage botanical prints, along with practical tips for printing, framing, and styling them for a cozy, timeless display.

How to Use Vintage Botanical Prints as Winter Decorations

If you follow this blog, you might remember I used vintage botanical prints—pine cones and seasonal foliage—as part of our Christmas decor in the master bedroom. Those same prints make an excellent, natural transition into Winter decor because they retain a seasonal feel without the bells and bows.

I used vintage pine cone botanical prints to create Christmas Wall art in our bedroom.

To quickly and easily turn Christmas decor into Winter decor, here’s what I did:

1. Remove the holiday-specific items

Start by taking down garlands, string lights, and any arrangements that read strongly as Christmas. Removing overt holiday elements immediately gives the room a more neutral, Winter-ready base.

2. Swap ornament ribbon for natural twine and hang from pegs

I hung the framed prints from the pegs on the shelf using jute twine for a simple, rustic look. If your wall doesn’t have pegs, arrange the frames as a gallery wall or lean a few against a mantel or shelf for a relaxed vibe. Using natural materials like jute, leather cord, or simple metal hooks helps keep the look Winter-appropriate rather than holiday-specific.

3. Add neutral accents to complete the scene

Keep the surfaces around the prints calm and textural. I layered a few antique books, a couple of live plants, and a single candle to create a warm yet minimal vignette. Neutral tones, wood, and greenery work especially well with botanical prints and help maintain a seasonal feeling without overwhelming the space.

How to get your own set of free vintage botanical winter art prints

These botanical printables are available in my printables library, which is password protected for VIP newsletter subscribers. If you’re not yet a subscriber, you can sign up to receive the password and instant access to the full library of printable art.

Once you have the files, printing and framing is straightforward and inexpensive, and it allows you to customize scale and finish to suit your space.

How to Print Free Printables with Your Home Printer

For the best results, print on heavyweight white cardstock. Cardstock adds body to the print and gives it a more professional look than regular copy paper. If you prefer a different finish, many local print shops will print the files on fine art paper or cardstock for a small fee.

Home printer capable of good color and crisp detail; choose one that supports the paper size you need and borderless printing if desired.

Heavyweight white cardstock for a more substantial, gallery-ready feel.

After printing, consider matting the prints inside the frame to add visual space around the botanical elements. Simple black, white, or natural wood frames complement vintage botanical art beautifully.

More ideas for using free printables and art prints as wall decor

Vintage botanical prints are versatile: they look at home as single statement pieces, grouped in odd-numbered clusters, or mixed with other neutral art and mirrors. Try different arrangements to see what balances best with your furniture and room proportions. You can also rotate seasonal prints throughout the year for fresh, low-cost updates.

Use a trio or five-piece arrangement above a dresser or sofa for an elegant focal point.

Mix sizes and frames for a collected, layered gallery wall.

Pair prints with natural textures—wood, linen, and woven baskets—to enhance a cozy Winter atmosphere.

For shelf styling, think low and layered: books, small plants, and a candle or two create a calm vignette that complements framed botanical art without competing for attention.

Burlap, Canvas and Flannel Stockings — A Cozy Holiday Project

Before I introduce the latest project, I want to say a sincere thank you. I appreciate every thoughtful comment and encouraging word you’ve taken the time to write. I tried to reply to each message at first, but keeping up with every response is harder than I expected. Please know I read them all and your kindness truly lifts my spirits.

I had so much fun making burlap Christmas stockings recently that I decided to expand the collection. This round blends rustic burlap with soft cream-colored canvas and cozy flannel to create a variety of looks that fit different holiday aesthetics — from farmhouse and rustic to soft and feminine. I made several variations, so there’s a little inspiration here whether you enjoy simple, pared-back designs or a more embellished style.

The basic pattern is straightforward and approachable for crafters of all skill levels. I cut each stocking from durable burlap for structure, then added a cream canvas cuff to soften the look and increase durability where the stocking hangs. For a warmer feel, some stockings receive a flannel lining or a flannel cuff to add texture and color contrast. These small choices make a big difference in the final appearance and tactile quality.

I kept several of the stockings very simple — raw burlap with a clean canvas cuff — for a classic, understated look that pairs beautifully with wooden or metal mantel decor. For others, I added small embellishments: a cluster of vintage-style buttons for a charming, homespun accent, or fabric flowers and ruffles for a more romantic, cottage-inspired design. These details let each stocking develop its own personality while still feeling cohesive as a set.

Here are a few ideas and tips if you want to make similar stockings:

Choose burlap with a medium weave so it’s sturdy but still sewable with a standard sewing machine needle.

Use a cream or off-white cotton canvas for the cuff to prevent fraying and to provide a clean contrast to the burlap.

If you prefer a softer interior, add a flannel lining—this hides seams and makes the stocking feel plush and warm.

Keep embellishments light: a few well-placed buttons, a small flower, or a short ruffle at the cuff will personalize the stocking without making it bulky.

Press seams carefully and consider topstitching along the cuff edge to secure layers and give a finished look.

When arranging the finished stockings, try grouping several different styles together on the mantel to create visual interest: alternate plain and embellished stockings, vary cuff heights and textures, and allow some stockings to drape while others hang straighter. A cohesive palette — burlap, cream canvas, and neutral or muted colors for florals — helps the display feel thoughtfully curated.

These stockings also make thoughtful handmade gifts. If you plan to give one as a present, consider personalizing it with a stitched initial or a small label sewn inside with a short note and date. That small detail turns a pretty decoration into a cherished keepsake.

Thank you again for following along and for all the encouragement. Crafting these stockings was a joyful way to welcome the season, and I hope these ideas inspire you to try a version of your own. Whether you keep the design simple or add delicate embellishments, a handmade stocking brings a warm, personal touch to holiday decor.

I often find myself searching for free printables for one reason or another. Talented designers and bloggers generously share beautiful artwork, tags, calendars, and lettering that you can download at no cost. If you like to refresh your home decor frequently, printables are an economical and flexible way to give a space a fresh look without spending much money.

Below are six practical and creative ways to use free printables around your home, with simple tips to get the best results from printing, displaying, and styling them.

1. Make a banner

{via Thistlewood Farms}

Letter printables are perfect for banners: print individual letters on cardstock, trim them into pennants or rectangles, then punch holes and string them on ribbon or twine. You can create seasonal messages, holiday greetings, or simple monograms. For a more rustic look, print on kraft paper or distress the edges with ink; for a modern feel, use bright cardstock or print on glossy paper.

2. Clip it on a window for creative wall art

{via Home Stories A-Z}

Clipping printables in front of a window or on a frame creates layered, airy art that changes with the light. Use small binder clips, wooden clothespins, or decorative bulldog clips and attach them to a thin wire or ribbon stretched across the window. This technique works especially well with translucent or lighter-weight paper and allows you to swap designs quickly for different seasons or events.

3. Lean it against a wall or backsplash

{via Elle Claire}

For an effortless vignette, place a printable on a clipboard or in an unframed mat and lean it against a wall, windowsill, or kitchen backsplash. This casual approach adds personality without the commitment of hanging, and it’s ideal for grouping with small objects like candles, plants, or framed photos. Try different sizes—an oversized print leaned behind smaller items instantly becomes a focal point.

4. Add it as a special touch to a gift

{via Lia Griffith}

Printable gift tags, labels, and small cards are an easy way to elevate presents. Print on heavy paper or attach a printable to kraft tags for a handcrafted look. You can coordinate tags with wrapping paper or ribbon, write a personalized note on the back, or use printable labels to organize party favors. Because there are so many styles available—floral, modern, vintage—printables let you tailor the presentation to the recipient or occasion.

5. Spell out a name (or any word you want)

{via Shanty 2 Chic}

Print individual letters to spell a name, a phrase, or a motivational word. You can mount each letter on a small wood block or board and hang them separately, or string them together as a traditional banner. Mixing fonts and colors makes a playful statement; mounting on reclaimed wood or painting the edges can give letters a custom, dimensional look that works well in nurseries, entryways, or office spaces.

6. Snap it in your binder to help stay organized

{via Shortstop Designs}

Printable calendars, planners, and checklist pages are an excellent, budget-friendly way to stay organized. Print your favorite layout on cardstock, hole-punch it, and add it to a binder with divider tabs. Use clear sleeves to protect frequently used pages or laminate smaller lists for reusable dry-erase use. This system is handy for meal planning, home projects, budgeting, or managing blog and family schedules.

Printing tips: choose a paper weight and finish appropriate to the project—heavyweight cardstock for tags and banners, matte photo paper for framed art, or translucent vellum for layered window displays. Adjust print settings for color accuracy, and scale prints to fit frames or mat openings. If you plan to display outdoors or in humid areas, consider laminating or framing behind glass to protect your printables.

Each of the ideas above can be adapted to suit your style and space, and there are countless free printable designs available across many creators and blogs. Try mixing styles, layering prints with found objects, and rotating pieces seasonally to keep your decor feeling fresh without a big investment.

Have you used free printables in your home? I’d love to hear how you display them—there’s always something inspiring about seeing new ways others style these versatile downloads.

Happy decorating!

Customize an electric fireplace to match your style with this clear, step-by-step guide to painting an electric fireplace.

I’ve read many articles about the benefits of chalk-style paints and have tried them on smaller pieces using both homemade chalk paint and commercial chalk paints. This time I wanted to tackle a larger project and see how a clay-based, chalk-type paint would perform on an electric fireplace.

Along with my curb-side find, I discovered a Canadian-made line of chalk-style paint that was perfect for this makeover.

Cottage Paint is a clay-based paint and offers a more affordable option than many other chalk-style brands. I found a local supplier near my Vancouver Island home and was eager to try it on this project.

This post contains affiliate links. If you purchase through one of the links below, I may receive a small commission at no extra cost to you.

Supplies Needed to Paint an Electric Fireplace:

Cottage Paint in Cloudy Sky color (or your preferred clay-based chalk paint)

150 grit sandpaper block

Painter’s tape

Clean rag or tack cloth

Good-quality paintbrush (a short, angled or small trim brush works well)

Cottage Paint Acrylic Wax in matte finish (or a compatible acrylic wax/sealer)

Wax application brush (a soft brush designed for wax or sealants)

Soap bar such as Sunlight to clean brushes

1. Prep the fireplace by scuffing the surface with 150 grit sandpaper.

Although some products claim that no sanding is necessary, lightly scuffing a shiny or factory-finished surface improves adhesion and helps the paint stick. Focus on smoothing away any glossy finish rather than removing material. After sanding, wipe the piece thoroughly with a clean rag or a tack cloth to remove dust and particles. If your fireplace has a black inner box or electronic components, protect them carefully with painter’s tape so paint won’t get where it shouldn’t.

2. Apply paint—use as many coats as needed and allow proper drying time.

Cottage Paint stuck well to the wood and provided good coverage, but darker surfaces can require more than the two coats often recommended on the can. Apply thin, even coats and allow each coat to dry fully before adding the next. Thinner coats build up a smoother finish with fewer drips. For very dark or heavily stained pieces, consider using a stain-blocking primer first to reduce the number of color coats needed.

3. Seal with Cottage Paint’s acrylic wax finish.

Not all chalk-style paints and finishes are the same. Cottage Paint’s finish is an acrylic-based wax product—water-based rather than true paste wax—which behaves differently and does not require the same buffing process as traditional waxes. Work in small sections when applying the acrylic wax, brushing it on evenly and removing any excess according to the product instructions. This sealer protects the paint and makes the surface easier to clean.

If you’re new to this particular brand, reviewing the manufacturer’s application steps or a short tutorial can be helpful to understand drying times and the best method for applying and finishing the acrylic wax.

The transformation dramatically improved the look of the electric fireplace. Here it is before the makeover:

And here it is after painting and sealing:

Having a small mantel to style is a bonus—simple seasonal decor, framed photos, or a mirror instantly make the area feel finished.

If you don’t come across a curb-side fireplace to update, there are many stylish white and neutral electric fireplace units available that can add a warm, farmhouse-inspired focal point to a living room. Painting an existing piece is a budget-friendly way to refresh a room and create a custom look that suits your decor.
