I’m in the mood for a big makeover—something like finally turning my cluttered basement storeroom into a neat, usable space. Before I tackle that, though, I have to finish the projects I’m already knee-deep in. As I reviewed them today, I realized each task is more than a chore; each one is a blessing. Instead of focusing only on what needs to be done, I want to pause and be thankful for what these tasks represent.
1. Painting and handmade signs
My Etsy shop ran out of the bluebird signs a few weeks ago, so yesterday I started restocking the shelves. I finished seven signs, and this morning an order for the third one arrived. I’m deeply grateful that people appreciate and buy my handmade work. That encouragement keeps me motivated to create more, and the quick sell-through of this color combination inspired me to plan another batch today. Selling handmade items not only supports a small creative business—it also connects me with people who value thoughtfully made, personal decor. I’m thankful for every customer and every order that affirms my craft.
2. Planting and gardening
While running errands the other evening, I noticed the first flats of baby plants hitting the garden centers. There’s a brief window when flats are inexpensive, so I picked up a few. Now they need to be potted up and moved into the greenhouse to perk up for a few weeks. Every time I work with flowers and seedlings I remember a man who once described places of extreme poverty where people hardly ever see a pretty bloom. He said, “Where there is no hope, there is no beauty.” That thought stays with me: a single colorful flower can uplift a spirit. I’m thankful I get to sow color, nurture life, and enjoy the simple, restorative act of gardening.
3. Pants (laundry)
Yes, laundry—mundane but meaningful. I admit I enjoy laundry most when I’m caught up, but beyond that five-minute pleasure, I’m grateful for the family whose clothes I wash. Doing their laundry is one of the small ways I care for them. I’m also thankful for a reliable washer and dryer that make life easier and give us clean clothes that smell fresh—a convenience we sometimes take for granted but that hasn’t always been guaranteed where I’ve lived.
4. Fresh produce and healthy cooking
I’m experimenting with new, healthier recipes this week and picked up an assortment of colorful produce. Some items—like eggplant—are ones I’ve never cooked with before. They’re visually appealing and add variety to the plate; if they don’t quite hit the mark flavor-wise, they’ll still make a pretty centerpiece on the table.

Fresh, colorful food is something I’m learning to appreciate more. If these recipes turn out well, I’ll share them; if not, we’ll pretend they were simply a learning experience. For now, it’s lunchtime and those vegetables are calling—time to chop and taste-test.
As I move through painting, planting, laundry, and cooking, I’m reminded that ordinary tasks can become moments of gratitude. Each activity connects me to others, to beauty, and to the simple comforts of daily life. I hope your day is filled with small blessings and that you find reasons to be thankful in your own to-do list.
