Before: a basic, functional closet ready for improvement

Our townhouse master closet is modest and straightforward. One small perk: it actually has a door, which gives it a more defined entry and allows the space to feel like a distinct area that can be styled and organized.

The first step: clear everything and assess

Completely emptying the closet and removing the shelving made the project feel manageable and motivated a serious purge. Emptying a closet is often the best first move—you can evaluate what storage you actually need and eliminate items you no longer wear.

My initial wish was to install bold wallpaper and custom shelving. That’s still on the dream list, but for now I focused on freshening the space and making it practical for everyday use.

Add a fresh coat of paint

With the closet clear, it was the ideal time to paint. I used leftover Silver Strand paint to revive the walls and trim, brightening the small area without a major expense.

A fresh, light paint color instantly makes a compact closet feel cleaner and more inviting—an inexpensive change that delivers big visual impact.

Plan organization based on needs, then add solutions

After painting, I reinstalled the existing shelves and hanging bars, then supplemented them with pieces of furniture we already had to meet our storage needs.

A mirror at the back of the closet adds light and a bit of sparkle while helping visually expand the space. Below the mirror I mounted a small bar that’s ideal for hanging necklaces, belts, and ties so they stay tangle-free and easy to see.

The small hanging bar was an inexpensive find from Ikea’s as-is section years ago and ended up being one of the most useful additions—proof that budget-friendly or repurposed pieces can make a big difference.

Use small bookcases for folded clothes and accessories

One of my favorite features is the corner shelving unit on my side. It’s an older bookcase I painted last year and repurposed for closet storage.

This compact bookcase neatly stores folded shirts, scarves, and accessories, while the top provides a convenient spot for jewelry storage and display. Using small furniture pieces like bookcases helps maximize vertical space without needing custom carpentry.

Stack shoes on shelves to save floor space

Our shoe collection is modest and fits comfortably under the hanging clothes on my husband’s side. Stacking shoes on low shelves or placing them under hanging garments keeps the floor clear and makes the closet feel more organized.

The refreshed closet feels brighter, cleaner, and much more functional. Small changes—painting, a mirror, a repurposed bookcase, and a few hooks or bars—can transform a cramped space into an efficient, pleasant storage area.

Someday I might add wallpaper, a chandelier, or custom shelving, but for now this practical refresh gives us everything we need.
