Organize Your Master Bedroom: Smart Storage and Layout Ideas

Follow these simple steps to organize the master bedroom and create a calm, restful retreat. You’ll sleep so much better!

Last year I completed a Modern Farmhouse master bedroom makeover and worked hard to get the closet and bedroom feeling like a cozy, peaceful space. Over time, though, small items were tucked away and clutter slowly crept back in. It was time for a refresh.

Below are the practical steps I used to tidy the room, organize the closet, and restore a calm atmosphere you’ll enjoy every night.

Gather supplies

  • A garbage bag for trash
  • A box for donations
  • A timer to keep you focused
  • Some upbeat music to keep momentum

Start laundry early: curtains and bedding

Begin by taking down curtains and any removable bedding covers and start them in the washer. Curtains and large bedding items take time to wash and dry, so getting them into the laundry first keeps the rest of your work flowing without interruption.

Tackle the worst area first

Everyone has a trouble spot. For me, it was the closet—sweaters shoved on a top shelf and hangers doubled up into outfits that made mornings chaotic. I pulled everything down from the shelves and sorted it in three piles: items I wear regularly, things to donate, and anything that needed repair or special care.

Items I still wear were neatly folded and returned to the shelf. Anything I hadn’t worn in a year went straight into the donation box. Next I cleared the hanging rod and laid those clothes on the bed to evaluate them one by one. If something didn’t fit or I no longer liked it, it joined the donation box. I also hung each garment on its own hanger instead of grouping outfits together; that makes finding pants or tops much faster on busy mornings.

With the hanging clothes addressed, I sorted the remaining shelf piles, refolded where needed, and grouped like items together so everything has a logical home.

Sort and organize jewelry

Jewelry storage can be a challenge. I use a few jewelry hangers on top of a shelving unit for necklaces and frequently worn pieces. If you have many small items, consider trays or small compartments so pieces don’t tangle and are easy to see.

Tidy dresser drawers

One of the best tips I learned is to fold clothes in drawers like an accordion and stand them upright. This method saves space, prevents wrinkling, and makes it simple to see every item at a glance.

Deep clean overlooked areas

After the clothing and storage are organized, take time to clean spots that are often ignored. I vacuumed behind and beneath furniture and removed the cover from the baseboard heater to clean dust and debris that had accumulated. A quick pass with the vacuum and a damp cloth refreshed the area instantly.

Since sunlight was streaming in, I also wiped down the windows and window frames. In damp climates mold can show up quickly, so regular attention to window frames helps keep the room fresh and healthy.

Finish with fresh linens, curtains, and styling

Once the laundry is done, rehang clean curtains and make the bed with fresh sheets and pillow covers. Fluff pillows and add a few simple decorative touches to create a restful, hotel-like feel. Clear nightstands of receipts, tissues, chargers, and miscellaneous items so surfaces feel calm and uncluttered.
