As part of the broader effort to simplify my home and life, I’ve also been streamlining my wardrobe. I wanted to be more intentional about the clothes I wear, focusing on pieces that are versatile, easy to mix and match, and that make getting dressed each morning a little more enjoyable. I’ve nicknamed this effort my “Pretty Project,” and it’s been surprisingly fun and rewarding.
One classic piece I’ve revisited is the white button-down shirt. It’s often cited as a wardrobe essential—and for good reason. A well-fitting white button-down is clean, timeless, and can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. It’s a cornerstone for building a flexible, capsule-style wardrobe.
There are countless ways to style a white button-down. For a polished look, pair it with a dark blazer and a statement necklace. The contrast between the crisp white shirt and a structured blazer creates a smart, tailored silhouette that works for both work and more formal casual events.
Layering the same shirt under a sweater creates a completely different vibe—cozy, relaxed, and perfect for cooler weather. You can let the collar peek out and cuff the sleeves for a preppy, put-together appearance, or leave it untucked and loose for an easy weekend look.

If you’ve tried button-downs before and had trouble with gaping or pulling, you’re not alone. Many of us—especially those with curvier figures—find standard cuts uncomfortable. Fortunately, there are a few practical strategies that make a white button-down work beautifully:
- Don’t hesitate to size up for a better fit, and have the shirt tailored where necessary to create a flattering shape.
- Wear a lightweight shaper camisole or a smooth undershirt to prevent gaping and create a clean line.
- Look for shirts with darts or princess seams at the bust—these details make the shirt fit closer to the body without pulling at the buttons.
Following that advice gave me the confidence to try button-downs again. I had luck with the Gap’s boyfriend button-down—comfortable, slightly relaxed, and easy to layer. I even found it on sale during a Black Friday promotion, which made it an even better investment.
On casual days I wear mine simply with jeans. When I want to elevate the outfit a bit, I tuck it into tailored pants or a skirt and add accessories. For colder days, layering works wonders: tuck the shirt in slightly, add a puffer vest for warmth, and finish with a patterned scarf for visual interest.
In my wardrobe, a black puffer vest (mine is from Superstore) and a houndstooth scarf add texture and contrast to a simple white shirt. These small additions instantly change the mood of an outfit without requiring an entirely new wardrobe.
Practical tips for keeping a white button-down looking its best: wash according to the care label, treat stains promptly, and avoid harsh detergents or bleaching agents that can weaken fabric over time. Press or steam the shirt before wearing to maintain a crisp appearance that elevates even the simplest outfits.
Photo credit for these shots goes to my oldest son, who kindly agreed to take the pictures while he was home for the holidays. It’s much easier than fussing with a tripod and a self-timer, and I’m grateful for his help.
Streamlining your wardrobe doesn’t mean sacrificing style. Choosing a few high-utility pieces, like a well-fitting white button-down, makes dressing simpler and more enjoyable. With a few styling tricks and the right tailoring, that classic shirt can become one of the most versatile items you own.
Have a pretty day!
