Best Weekend at Home: Gardening, Deck Breaks, and a Front Door Makeover
We just had the best weekend at home. With a few days off from the usual camp-kitchen routine, my husband and I decided to stay put instead of traveling. Our sons were away on their own adventures, which gave us the freedom to choose how to spend the time. It turned out to be a really good decision—productive, peaceful, and restorative.
Most of the weekend was spent outdoors tackling simple but satisfying yard and garden tasks. We weeded the beds, added fresh mulch, raked up stray leaves and grass, and trimmed overgrown edges. These routine maintenance chores don’t take long when you keep up with them, but doing them in one focused weekend made the whole property look cared for and tidy. Investing a little time now saves much more effort later and keeps plants healthier and happier.

We balanced work with plenty of breaks. The deck became our little headquarters for coffee and conversation—sometimes a cold Coke or a scoop of Moose Tracks ice cream interrupted the rhythm, which only made the day sweeter. Those short pauses gave us energy and a chance to enjoy the yard we were improving. Taking the time to sit down and appreciate the view is one of the reasons staying home felt so special.

Besides outdoor work, my husband used part of the weekend to complete homework for a course he’s taking. It was nice to have a mix of productive tasks—some hands-on and some quiet, focused work. Meanwhile, I set aside time to “quiet” the house. The clutter had become louder than it should be, so I cleared surfaces, rearranged a few things, and created more breathing room. A calmer, more organized entry and living area does wonders for daily peace of mind.

One of the practical lessons we both appreciate is how a little preventive care goes a long way. Spending time on flower beds, trimming hedges, and maintaining hardscaping now prevents larger repairs and keeps the property attractive season after season. If you’re planning yard work, try to break it into manageable tasks—mulching and weeding one weekend, pruning another—and you’ll find it’s less overwhelming and more enjoyable.
I also began a new front door project I’m really excited about. It started with a simple before stage that needed attention: the paint, hardware, and surrounding trim were looking tired. I’ve been planning a thoughtful refresh—nothing extreme, just improvements that will lift curb appeal and make the entry feel welcoming. When the project is finished I’ll return and share the finished result and the steps I took to get there.

It felt wonderful to complete small projects that make a real difference. The combination of outdoor labor, organized indoor time, and little creative upgrades left us refreshed and ready for busy weeks ahead. I’ve missed connecting with everyone, and I’m looking forward to sharing the front door reveal soon.
What projects are you working on these days—garden maintenance, home refreshes, or DIY upgrades? I’d love to hear what’s keeping you busy. Whatever you’re doing, I hope you’re finding time to enjoy the process and have a wonderful week ahead.
