Room makeovers don’t have to be expensive. Here are eight budget-friendly transformations completed for under $200 each.
Years of living in older, historic houses taught me a lot about breathing new life into tired rooms. With limited funds and a lot of creativity, I learned how small, thoughtful changes can deliver big impact.
These projects were done with tight budgets and a focus on smart choices—paint, hardware, lighting, textiles, and a little bit of styling. The results felt fresh, inviting, and much more functional, without spending a fortune.
Below are the “before” photos and short descriptions of each makeover. If you want to view the full reveal and the detailed breakdown for any room, look for the original post on the project archive.

Room Makeovers Completed on a Tight Budget
The $159 Kitchen Makeover

This was one of our most dramatic and affordable makeovers. The kitchen needed fresh color, updated hardware, and a few stylistic changes to improve both form and function. By choosing cost-effective materials and focusing on high-impact areas—cabinet fronts, light fixtures, and open shelving—we transformed the space for $159. The result feels brighter, cleaner, and more welcoming.
Beach Cottage Bedroom

This small bedroom was dark and cramped before its makeover—nicknamed “the coffin” for how enclosed it felt. With a careful selection of light paint, layered textiles, and minimal furniture rearrangement, the room became a coastal-inspired retreat. The approach was simple: maximize light, keep the palette soft, and add texture for warmth.
Basement Craft & Laundry Room

Doing laundry in this basement space used to be a chore. The makeover focused on improving storage, creating distinct zones for craft and laundry tasks, and upgrading lighting. Affordable shelving, labeled bins, and a coordinated color scheme turned a utilitarian area into a more pleasant, organized workspace.
From Boring to Boho Master Bedroom

Our townhouse master bedroom was in good condition but lacked personality. For $125 we introduced boho-inspired elements—layered rugs, textured pillows, a focal wall treatment, and simple accessories. The makeover added warmth and character while maintaining a relaxed, cohesive feel.
Little Laundry Room

When the washing machine unexpectedly failed, we took the opportunity to rework this compact laundry room. Replacing a few fixtures, refreshing the walls, and installing practical storage gave the small space a fresh, efficient layout. The upgrade made laundry a faster, less frustrating task.
Small Bedroom Turns into a Rustic Home Office

When our youngest moved out, we repurposed his bedroom into a rustic home office for my husband. The transformation focused on durable surfaces, a comfortable work area, and characterful storage. Reclaimed-look accents and smart organization made the room practical and inviting for daily use.

How to Plan a Room Makeover on a Budget
If you want to refresh a room without overspending, start with a clear plan. Identify the problem areas—lighting, paint, storage, or layout—and decide which changes will create the most noticeable improvement. Prioritize low-cost, high-impact updates like a fresh coat of paint, updated hardware, new lighting, and improved organization.
Shop for multipurpose items and secondhand finds, and consider DIY solutions for trim, shelving, and styling. Small changes, carefully chosen, can completely change how a room looks and feels. Consistency in color and texture across a space will help smaller budgets achieve a polished result.
I also developed a free step-by-step series that walks through my process for planning and finishing budget makeovers, including checklists and practical tips I’ve used over the years. If you’re ready to tackle a room, this course outlines a straightforward approach to help you start and complete projects while keeping costs low.

Room makeovers don’t require a big budget—just a clear vision, a few targeted updates, and the confidence to try something new. With planning and creativity, you can transform spaces into places you enjoy for years to come.
