Summer Favorites: Flattering Swimsuits for Women Over 40

I don’t know what your weather has been like this past week, but it’s been exceptionally hot in our corner of the world.

We experienced temperatures far above our usual cool coastal norms—days that felt hotter than any recorded on Vancouver Island. Multiple days in a row topped 100 degrees, which is truly unusual where we live and normally enjoy ocean breezes.

With that heatwave as the backdrop, I wanted to share a few summer favorites we’ve been using and loving—especially the best swimsuits I’ve found for women over 40. These picks have helped me feel comfortable, supported, and confident while enjoying time at the pool and the lake.

Miracle Suit Swimsuit

I spent many hot summer days at our town pool growing up. Swimming has always been one of my favorite low-impact activities—even though I’m not particularly athletic, I find the water calming and enjoyable.

As I’ve gotten older, I started feeling more self-conscious in swimsuits, and that took away from my enjoyment. Recently, I found a swimsuit that changed that feeling for me: a MiracleSuit tankini that provides support, coverage, and confidence.

I put on my new MiracleSuit nearly every day and headed to the lake with my husband for evening swims. It has been a total game-changer—comfortable, flattering, and practical for everyday swimming.

The specific features I look for in a swimsuit are simple but essential:

  • a tankini for easier bathroom access,
  • good support and coverage in the bust,
  • full-coverage bottoms, and
  • a style that makes me feel cute and confident.

I found a black-and-white floral tankini top paired with coordinating bottoms. The top has a flowy overlayer with a central slit and a secure, full-coverage lining underneath. It holds everything in comfortably without cutting off circulation. For extra coverage when I want it, I’ve been wearing swim shorts over the bottoms—either as an added layer or instead of the bottoms when I prefer more coverage.

I discovered my set at a local Winners store in Canada, where they were sold as a set. You may be able to find similar options at other retailers or department stores.

Swimsuit Coverup

A lightweight, easy-to-wear coverup is another must-have. I like something that slips on and off comfortably between the car, the pool, and the beach. I picked up a fun coverup at a local shop and found a few similar styles that offer the same quick coverage and breezy feel. The right coverup helps transition from swim time to casual summer activities while keeping you comfortable and protected from the sun.

Best Sunscreen for Sensitive Skin

I have very sensitive, allergy-prone skin, so finding a sunscreen that doesn’t irritate me and that doesn’t feel greasy was a priority. My favorite lately is La Roche-Posay with SPF 60. It’s pricier than some options, but it works well with sensitive skin and provides strong sun protection. I prioritize preventing sunburn because it’s one thing I can control, so I use a reliable, high-SPF formula whenever I’ll be exposed to intense sun.

Portable Air Conditioner Unit

Until this week, we had never needed an air conditioner. Living near the ocean usually keeps our home cool, but the recent heat made us rethink that. We were fortunate to borrow a portable window air conditioner, and it was an absolute lifesaver. It wasn’t large enough to cool the entire house, but it made our bedroom comfortable enough to sleep, which was a huge relief.

With every store on the island sold out of AC units during the heatwave, having a portable unit on loan allowed us to rest and recover from the high daytime temperatures. We now plan to purchase one for ourselves to be better prepared for future heat events.
