Gray and Foggy: A Weekend Away and a Monday Craft Party
If gray is the latest trend in color, today’s weather certainly fits the bill. From my kitchen window the view is soft, muted and misty — a classic gray-and-foggy morning that makes the world feel calm and introspective.
There’s a light drizzle outside — the kind of weather my son used to call “froggy” when he was small. On days like this I often find it harder to summon energy and motivation. The muted sky seems to encourage slow movement and quiet thoughts, rather than bustling activity.
Interestingly, last Monday was sunny and warm and I still struggled to get motivated. That made me wonder whether it’s the grey weather that slows me down, or just the start-of-week slump that many of us feel. Either way, I’m exploring ways to turn that sluggish feeling into something productive and even enjoyable.

My husband and I took a short trip last week — a change of pace that felt refreshing. We left our peaceful island routine behind for a few days in Vancouver. The city offered a lively contrast to our quieter life: busy streets, interesting shops and the chance to reconnect with both new acquaintances and longtime friends.
City traffic made me gasp a few times — it’s not something I miss — but the trip was well worth it. We managed to balance business obligations with leisurely exploration. While my husband attended meetings, I embraced the freedom of wandering through neighborhoods, browsing stores and soaking up the urban energy.
One of the highlights was experiencing the warmth of hospitality. We were welcomed into homes with open doors and gracious hosts who made us feel immediately at ease.
Beyond the curb appeal of interesting front doors, the genuine hospitality we received was the real gift. Conversations flowed easily, meals were shared, and it was a pleasure to step inside different homes and appreciate the personal touches that made each space welcoming.
During the trip I enjoyed browsing through boutiques and design shops. I came away inspired by creative displays and clever home decor ideas, and I’m eager to bring several of those concepts into my own space. It’s always energizing to return home with fresh inspiration after seeing how others express style and hospitality.
Back at home, I decided to put motivation into practice. Last Monday I hosted an impromptu “Motivational Monday: Craft and Coffee” gathering. I posted the idea on Facebook mid-morning for a one o’clock start, and the response was great. The quick deadline worked in my favor — it prompted me to tidy the house, prepare a simple meal and lay out craft projects in record time.
The party itself was exactly what I needed: conversation, creativity and a relaxed pace that turned chores into a social, enjoyable event. Friends arrived ready to craft, sip coffee and share encouragement. The momentum we created together made the rest of the week feel more manageable.
If you struggle with motivation on gray days or on Mondays, consider scheduling a small, time-limited social event to get things moving. Invite a friend for coffee while you tackle a project, or set a brief deadline that forces you to prepare — the combination of company and urgency can be remarkably effective.
Perhaps I’ll make “Motivational Monday” a regular habit. It’s a simple ritual that combines productivity with pleasure, and it turns the start of the week into something to look forward to rather than dread. Smiles included.
