Small Townhouse Living Room Tour — A Fresh Boho Update

Welcome if you’re new here — you’re just in time to see our freshly updated townhouse living room. Over the last few weeks I’ve been on a focused organizing and refresh mission to make the whole house feel lighter and more functional. This living room is one of the first spaces I finished after tackling several storage areas and small furniture updates throughout the home.

What I’ve Been Working On

This is week three of an eight-week plan to organize and refresh every area. So far I’ve cleared and reorganized:

  • the entryway closet
  • office supplies in the Billy bookcase
  • desk drawers and office storage
  • the dining room buffet
  • and made a simple DIY laptop end table

With the “insides” of the living and dining room organized, I turned my attention to the room’s look and flow. I shopped our house for decorative pieces, mixed in a few new accents, and came up with a bright, comfortable Boho-inspired design that maximizes the small footprint without feeling crowded.

I describe the result as a warm BoHo look: a mix of cheerful colors, layered textures, and playful patterns anchored by a standout art print I purchased from Minted earlier this year. Using one strong focal piece helps the whole room read as intentional, even when many small decorative elements are borrowed from other parts of the house.

Simple Changes That Made a Big Difference

A few small swaps had a surprisingly big impact on how open and inviting the room feels:

  • Layered textiles — Adding cozy blankets and a variety of pillows covers the sofa and gives it a fresh, curated look while hiding any signs of wear.
  • Removed the heavy coffee table — Replacing it with two lightweight tables on clearance gives the room flexibility and makes the walkway feel much more open.
  • Added extra seating — The new lightweight tables freed up space for two small chairs at the end of the couch, creating a conversation area without crowding the room.
  • Greenery and color accents — A few plants and pops of color bring life to the space, balancing the patterned textiles and the focal print.

If you have an older couch or dated furniture, layering is your friend. Throws hide imperfections while cushions add depth. Mixing different pillow sizes and patterns gives a collected-over-time look that feels intentional rather than staged.

Practical Tips for Small Living Rooms

Here are a few practical tips I used while refreshing this space that you can apply in your own home:

  • Keep circulation in mind — opt for smaller, lighter furniture near traffic paths to keep the room feeling open.
  • Choose one focal piece — a large print, mirror, or statement lamp can unify mixed decor styles.
  • Mix patterns with a common color — repeating a single color across pillows, rugs, and art helps different patterns work together.
  • Bring in plants — even a couple of small houseplants add texture and a sense of freshness.
  • Use multi-functional furniture — lightweight or nesting tables can be moved around for different needs, especially in compact rooms.

We’re really enjoying the new vibe of the living room. The colors and greenery brighten these gray, rainy winter days and serve as a cheerful reminder that spring is on the way. Little updates and thoughtful organization can make a small space feel fresh and welcoming without a major renovation.

Thanks for stopping by the tour. If you’re working on your own small living room, start with one or two changes — like swapping a heavy coffee table for lighter options or adding a statement print — and build from there. Small steps can create big change.
