We’re Moving: Letting Go and Looking Ahead
This summer two of my favorite home décor bloggers announced big changes. Melissa from The Inspired Room has begun settling into her new home in Seattle, and Ashley from The Handmade Home still has her house on the market. Reading their news made my heart sink a little—I’ve admired their homemaking journeys and the rooms I’ve come to associate with them. Ashley’s kitchen was even one of the inspirations for my own kitchen makeover.
So I’ve wrestled with how and when to share our news: we are moving too. I wanted to wait until dates and details were certain so I could offer a neat update, but life rarely unfolds in tidy packages. Instead of a polished, final chapter, this is the messy, honest middle of saying goodbye to a home that has held so many years of our lives.
Over the 25 years we’ve been married we’ve lived in six different homes: a six-bedroom country house when it was just the two of us, an apartment with a tiny kitchen and laundry two floors down, and several houses in between. If I had to pick a favorite, I honestly couldn’t—each home had qualities I loved and memories I cherish.
Even so, I’ve always held each house lightly. I poured my heart into creating a warm, lived-in space—not for resale value but for the joy of living there—while remembering it wasn’t ours forever. That perspective has helped as we prepare to move again.
As a home décor blogger, I find this transition unusual. My focus used to be small renovations and ongoing makeovers; right now I’m not doing major projects. Instead, I’m making sure the house is left in good shape for the next family—sorting, purging, organizing, and cleaning so the home can feel ready for its next chapter.
Letting go now makes room to say hello. We’re looking forward to whatever comes next, even though leaving a place where we’ve ministered and lived for 23 years is painful. Still, we carry hope as we step into this season of change.
We’ve known since June that we’d likely move within the year, and we’re grateful to have some time to process and prepare. For now we continue to live here while my husband serves in a consultative role at the camp and we prayerfully consider where God might be calling us next. If you’re the praying sort, we’d appreciate your prayers during this season.
To stay grounded through the change, I’ve picked up a few projects: working part time at the jewelry store through the holidays, KonMari-ing our home (which is surprisingly fun even if you’re not moving), and creating items to stock my Etsy shop before Christmas—maybe to help fund the moving truck. These small, practical steps help me feel productive and hopeful.
Thank you for being part of this homemaking journey with me. I’ll share the next chapter when it becomes clearer—I’m excited to let you know where we land.
