On a recent visit to Decatur, Georgia, I spent the day window shopping through a handful of delightful local boutiques. Each shop sat in a character-filled, historic building—exposed brick, tall ceilings and an almost industrial charm—creating the perfect backdrop for thoughtfully curated displays and unique finds.

SQ/FT — 149 Sycamore Street:

Walking into SQ/FT felt like stepping into a creative marketplace. A bicycle leaned by the doorway, greeting visitors with a playful touch, and colorful aprons coaxed me into imagining a cozy cooking session. The shop retained faint, faded signage from eras past on its walls, a small reminder of the building’s history that harmonized beautifully with the modern merchandise.

Small details—like pennant banners strewn across a display—made everything feel celebratory. I loved how colorful dish patterns sat comfortably atop an old industrial cart, mixing new and old elements in a way that felt effortlessly stylish.

Squash Blossom Boutique:

Squash Blossom Boutique is full of personality. One of the first things I noticed were the adorable fitting rooms—so charming they deserve their own photo—and the way pennant banners reappeared throughout the shop, tying the space together. The boutique blends playful décor with wearable pieces, making each corner inviting and easy to explore.

Wild Oats and Billy Goats:

I absolutely adored this shop’s name—and the products were just as memorable. Wild Oats and Billy Goats features clever, hand-crafted items made from unexpected materials. Coasters, trivets, salt dishes, vases and even cheese boards formed from cement brought a modern, tactile edge to everyday homeware. Seeing such inventive uses for concrete felt fresh and inspiring.

Having recently tried pottery for the first time, I found new appreciation for handcrafted ceramics and vessels. The craftsmanship on display made it easy to imagine each piece at home—simple, functional, and full of character.

One clever display featured an old suitcase repurposed as an earring holder—an inventive, space-saving idea that felt both nostalgic and practical.

Part of what made the day so enjoyable were the people I met. The staff at Squash Blossom Boutique were warm, welcoming and full of local recommendations—coffee shops, restaurants, and neighborhood tips that made exploring Decatur even more rewarding. Their friendliness turned a simple shopping trip into a small community experience.
