Boho Style Living Room: What It Is and How It Works

Combine vintage, bold, and patterned elements for a chic boho-style living room.

My husband and I recently started a little evening ritual of watching classic TV sitcoms. We enjoy their simple plots and often laugh at the dated fashions and home decor—bell bottoms, perms, and heavily patterned furniture encased in thick plastic all made an appearance in last night’s episode.

I’m especially drawn to the decor details. Just like clothing, interior design trends come and go and often return with a fresh twist. Modern boho is one of those styles: it borrows from mid-century and 1970s influences while keeping things relaxed, layered, and approachable. Over time I’ve introduced boho touches in several rooms of our house, and the living room is the latest space to get a makeover.

So far, boho elements have appeared in our master bedroom, dining room, and now the living room.

How to create a Boho Style Living Room

Choose bold boho wall art as a focal point

In this living room the wall art above the couch sets the tone. Rather than assembling a gallery wall, I chose one large, graphic piece that anchors the seating area and introduces the colors and shapes used throughout the room. If you enjoy DIY, painting a boho landscape is another fun way to get a custom look.

Tip: a single oversized artwork can make a stronger visual statement than many small frames and simplifies placement of surrounding elements like sconces or lamps.

Lay down a patterned rug

A patterned rug instantly creates a boho foundation. The rug in our space is neutral with subtle motifs that add visual interest without overwhelming the room. Boho rooms often layer textures and patterns, so you can experiment with one bold rug or combine different rugs for depth and warmth.

Install wall lamps above the couch

Wall-mounted lamps free up surface space and create a clean, curated look above the sofa. We swapped table lamps for adjustable wall sconces and are very happy with the result.

Tips for installing wall lamps above the couch

  • Mock up the size and position of artwork with painter’s tape to determine lamp placement before drilling.
  • We placed the lamp base about 18½ inches above the back of the couch; adjust for the height of your seating.
  • Use the adjustable arms to balance the composition—set arms to similar positions on each side so the look is symmetrical.
  • Choose warm, dimmable bulbs—about 2700K and 800 lumens (roughly equivalent to 60W incandescent)—for comfortable, cozy light ideal for reading.
  • Consider a dimmer or a dimmable plug-in solution so you can soften lighting while watching TV or create a relaxed evening ambiance.

Mix fabrics and patterns

Boho is playful mix-and-match: combine different prints, textures, and scales for an eclectic, collected feel. I found several coordinating fabrics on clearance and made simple pillow covers with zippers so the look can be changed seasonally. You can go bright and colorful or keep it neutral with black, white, and warm leather tones—either approach works for boho.

Generously add plants

Greenery is a hallmark of boho decor. I arranged a variety of houseplants in rattan, wicker, pottery, and wooden vessels to bring life and texture into the room. Place a larger plant on a stand to anchor a corner and mix smaller plants on tables and shelves to create layers of interest. Vary leaf shapes and pot materials for an organic, lived-in look.

Include vintage pieces

Vintage finds add personality and history to a boho room. I’ve collected chairs, side tables, and a round table that has been in the family for decades. Mixing contemporary pieces with a few vintage items makes the space feel curated rather than staged.

Have fun and be flexible

Decorating is an experiment. Start with the big essentials—sofa, rug, and a dominant art piece—then swap pillows, throws, plants, and accessories until the room feels right. Small changes can refresh the space without a major renovation, so don’t be afraid to try something new.

Living with this boho living room

In photos I often style the room densely with plants and accessories, but daily life tends to be simpler. Many of the real plants don’t thrive in the dimmer corners, so we sometimes substitute smaller items on the coffee and side tables. Practically, we keep fewer pillows on the couch and prioritize a place for coffee cups and cozy evenings.

We especially appreciate the wall lights above the sofa; they offer much better task lighting than the old table lamps in our darker room.
