I absolutely adore color. Bold or soft, bright or muted — color shapes mood, sets tone, and speaks to who we are. I went through my photo archives and picked images that capture the feelings certain colors evoke for me. Each color below represents a distinct emotional atmosphere.
Pink — soft, feminine, and gentle. It brings warmth and a tender, inviting energy to a room.
Blue — calming, soothing, and serene. It helps create a peaceful backdrop where the mind can relax.
White — clean, crisp, and dreamy. White can make a space feel open, fresh, and uncluttered.
Green — fresh, renewing, and life-affirming. It brings a sense of growth and balance into a home.
Yellow — sunny, uplifting, and cheerful. It infuses spaces with optimism and energy.
Brown — grounded, stable, and rustic. Brown brings warmth and a sense of security to a space.
Red — rich, spirited, and romantic. It adds intensity and passion when used thoughtfully.
There’s no doubt: the use of color is one of the single most impactful choices you can make when decorating a home. A simple change in paint can completely alter how a room feels and how you experience it.
For example, our basement laundry room transformed with just a few cans of paint and some elbow grease. That makeover demonstrates how color, combined with a bit of work, can change both the look and the atmosphere of a space.
That said, my enthusiasm for every shade can make choosing a palette challenging. I’ve been guilty of wanting to use them all — which is both a blessing and a dilemma. Over time I’ve learned that personal taste evolves. What thrilled me in one season of life didn’t always fit the next.
In our previous home I favored bold, saturated tones — golden yellows, barn reds, and deep blues. Those colors were energizing and suited the busy, hands-on phase of raising young children. After moving to a new house and entering a different chapter, my preferences shifted toward lighter, more soothing hues. The home we live in, and the life we lead in it, called for a different palette.
Color choices reflect who we are at a particular moment. They respond to light, architecture, lifestyle, and the emotional tone you want to set. A playful, vibrant palette will serve a family room or playroom well, while muted neutrals and soft pastels can create a restful bedroom or a calm workspace.
If you find yourself torn between colors, a few practical tips can help narrow the options: sample paint on large poster boards and observe them at different times of day; consider the room’s function and the mood you want to create; test how colors interact with existing furniture and floors; and remember that accents — textiles, artwork, and accessories — allow you to introduce brighter hues without overwhelming a space.
Design is personal and fluid. As life changes, so do our preferences. Embrace that evolution and let color be the tool that helps your home reflect who you are now.
Tomorrow I’ll share resources that helped me narrow my choices and settle on a palette that suits this season of life.
