We recently installed the farmhouse shelves I’d been dreaming of in our dining room — a true Fixer Upper–style update. Finding the black brackets I wanted became a vacation triumph when we discovered them at Hobby Lobby in Washington. While there I wandered aisles filled with Fixer Upper–inspired farmhouse decor and quickly felt excited and overwhelmed by so many great options.
Instead of buying on impulse, I paused, collected my thoughts in a nearby coffee shop, and created a simple plan. Below are the four steps I used to choose cohesive, stylish farmhouse decor for our dining room shelves. These practical tips will help you shop with purpose and style your space like a pro.
How to Choose Farmhouse Decor for Your Dining Room
(When the options are overwhelming)
1. Find inspiration and make a list
Before you buy, identify the look you want. I used Pinterest to search for “farmhouse shelves” and saved examples to my Modern Farmhouse board. Studying those images helped me recognize common elements I admired: balanced groupings, varying heights, a mix of textures, and a few standout pieces.
One image from a popular shelf-styling blog especially influenced me. It highlighted how a mix of sizes and textures creates visual interest and flow. With that clearer vision, I returned to the store ready to choose items that fit the look I had in mind.

2. Choose large anchor pieces first
Start by selecting a few large pieces that will anchor the display and define the focal points. For my shelves, a “Gather Together” sign became the top focal piece, and I added two more sizeable items to provide balance and visual weight.
Large items do more of the heavy lifting than many small trinkets. They set the scale for the entire arrangement and reduce the temptation to overcrowd the shelves with lots of tiny objects.

3. Remember the Fixer Upper formula
Designers who favor the Fixer Upper style often combine four key textures: wood, black metal, galvanized finishes, and greenery. When you mix these elements, you get the signature cozy, layered farmhouse look.
- Wood — for warmth and rustic charm
- Black metal — for contrast and industrial flair
- Galvanized finishes — for vintage, utilitarian texture
- Greenery — for life, color, and softness
I chose medium-height items that reflected these textures and even found versatile pieces in the seasonal aisles — evergreen stems and an enamelware vase that work year-round. These medium pieces bridge the large anchors and smaller accessories, helping the display feel cohesive.

4. Fill in empty spots with “littles”
After placing your anchor and medium pieces, fill gaps with smaller items you already own: books, vintage finds, small pottery, or framed photos. These “littles” complete the vignette, personalize the space, and prevent it from looking too staged.
When arranging items on each shelf, use a simple zig-zag pattern for color and height. Move white or light pieces back and forth across shelves to balance the eye. The zig-zag approach mimics the natural rhythm found in professional shelf styling and helps maintain harmony across multiple shelves.

As I styled the shelves, I incorporated items from my decor stash to finish the look and create a warm, collected feel. The result is a cozy, Fixer Upper–inspired arrangement that complements my parents’ antique buffet and makes our city townhouse feel more like home.
