A First-Timer's Honest Review of Kefir

One of the things I love about blogging is the chance to write product reviews. A few weeks ago I got an email about reviewing Olympic Dairy. It included a photo of some of Olympic’s products, and my eye went straight to the yogurt. I fired off a “Please, pick me!!!” note. We eat a lot of yogurt at our house, and I had plenty of ideas for how I’d review it.

Little did I realize that the company would choose which item I’d review. When my note arrived in the mail, it cheerfully announced that I was to review kefir.

KEFIR?

Oh, my stars. I had never tasted it in my life.

I quickly googled it to find out what it was. It sounded very healthy… and, to be honest, I was a little wary of its description: “a fermented milk product.”

Does that sound appealing to you?

But I had committed, and dog-gone-it, I was determined to write an honest review.

So, here it is:

First of all, if you’re like me, you won’t even know what kind of container it comes in. So let me help you out. It looks like milk.

Once I had it in the house, I honestly didn’t know what to do with it! So I googled, and asked friends, neighbors, and total strangers for ideas about this “super good for you” fermented milk product.

They taught me a lot. I learned:

  1. Kefir contains an active culture that is a probiotic, which aids your digestive system.
  2. You should think of kefir as a thin yogurt.
  3. Kefir can be used in baking in place of buttermilk.
  4. If you have a sensitive digestive system (like me) and have never tried it before (also like me), it’s recommended that you start with small amounts until your digestive system gets used to it.

Taking all those words of wisdom to heart, I tried it for the first time. I gingerly unscrewed the cap and took a big sniff ~ and to my surprise, it smelled good! ~ very similar to yogurt.

My new friends and kefir experts suggested I might like it with fruit, so I decided to give a kefir smoothie a whirl. I gathered a banana, fresh strawberries, and a whole handful of frozen blueberries, and tossed them into my handy dandy blender.

Once the fruit was all blended up, I poured in some kefir, a splash of agave sweetener, and a splash of vanilla. {I don’t measure exactly when I make a smoothie ~ I start with a little and add more of something if needed.}

The verdict? It was delicious! My husband agrees. :)

I look forward to “testing” this a little more often. Have you ever tried kefir? If so, I’d love for you to share why you use it and how. I’d love to add you to my club of kefir experts. :)
