Genius IKEA Hacks to Maximize Small Closet Storage

Double the usable space in a tiny closet with these simple, smart, and budget-friendly small closet ideas, organization tips, and DIY Ikea-inspired hacks.

Last week we began the Modern Farmhouse Boho bedroom makeover for the One Room Challenge. The very first task was tackling the closet: finding small closet organization solutions we could DIY using mostly what we already had on hand. The goal was to save money and time while making the closet more functional and attractive.

In just a few hours we were able to double the amount of hanging storage and create much better drawer and shelf organization. These practical ideas maximize space and keep the closet looking tidy.

Small Closet Organization Ideas – DIY on a Budget

These tips focus on low-cost changes and repurposing existing items to get the most from a small closet.

1. Stack hanging rods to double hanging space

Our closet originally had a single hanging rod and shelf on each side. The first move was to relocate both rods to one side and stack them—one higher and one lower. This simple rearrangement instantly created twice the hanging capacity in the same footprint.

This space needed practical small closet ideas and organization solutions.

We placed dress shirts, suits, and dress pants on the upper rod, within reach, and hung dresses, skirts, and everyday tops on the lower rod. The floor space beneath the lower rod became ideal for shoe storage.

Styling and hardware suggestions

  • Choose sturdy closet brackets that include space for a rod and a shelf above it.
  • Look for brackets and mounts noted for stability and easy installation so shelves and rods stay level and secure.

2. Add a narrow shelf up high for out-of-season items

Measure carefully and install a shallow shelf above the top rod to store off-season shoes, hats, or bulky scarves. A step stool makes these items accessible without taking up prime hanging space.

3. Use a small dresser for folded clothing

If a full closet system is out of budget, a short dresser inside the closet gives immediate drawer space and helps reduce clutter.

With one side of the closet cleared, we moved a short dresser from the bedroom into the closet to provide drawers. Having both hanging and folded storage is a great balance—some items hang better while others are best folded to keep their shape.

What to hang versus what to fold

Items best folded to avoid stretching: sweaters, t-shirts, sweatshirts, underwear, socks, and pajamas. Items that typically hang well: coats, blazers, blouses, dresses, skirts, and dress pants.

4. Add open shelves with baskets to maximize storage

Shelves combined with baskets create tidy, visible storage that’s quick to assemble and budget-friendly.

Above the dresser we installed three simple shelves using brackets and boards. Baskets placed on the shelves keep items grouped, reduce visual clutter, and make seasonal items easy to rotate.

How to add shelves in a small closet

  • Measure the width of the closet and cut shelf boards to fit.
  • Paint or finish shelves to match the closet—ours are painted a bright white in semi-gloss for easy cleaning.
  • Install brackets securely, using drywall anchors if you cannot fasten into studs.
  • Use a level when positioning the first bracket, then mark and install the second bracket so the shelf sits perfectly level.
  • Fasten the shelf to the brackets from underneath for a solid, secure surface.

Baskets and storage ideas

Matching baskets give shelves a clean, elevated look and keep smaller items contained. Label baskets with tags to quickly identify contents. For tight spaces, compression packing cubes work well to compress off-season clothing and save shelf or floor space.

5. Create a jewelry station on the dresser

Use small trays, a jewelry tree, and wall hooks to keep earrings, rings, and necklaces organized and easy to find.

A few shallow felt-lined trays are ideal for earrings and bracelets, while a jewelry tree or a few small hooks can hold rings and hoop earrings. Hooks on the wall are perfect for long necklaces and belts, preventing tangles and saving drawer space.

6. Hang long necklaces and belts on hooks

Install a row of simple hooks on an inside wall or the closet door to keep necklaces tangle-free and belts visible. This small addition saves time each morning and keeps accessories in good condition.

With thoughtful organization and storage solutions, even a small closet can feel spacious and stylish.

We’re thrilled with how the closet functions now—no more digging each morning. Small changes made the space more efficient and visually pleasing.

Cost and supplies for this small closet makeover

Because we reused many items, the project cost was minimal. Here’s a breakdown of what we used and the small expenses:

  • Paint: left over white paint for walls and shelves.
  • Three 2×10 boards for shelves; we had two and purchased one extra 8-foot board for about $14.
  • Six shelf brackets (we used brackets we already owned).
  • Four wicker baskets purchased on sale for about $5 each, totaling roughly $20.

Approximate total cost: $34 — largely for the extra wood and baskets.

More small closet organization ideas

  • Use space-saving hangers to increase hanging capacity.
  • Consider adjustable track shelving if you prefer a modular solution that can be customized to your closet dimensions.
  • Use over-the-door organizers for shoes and accessories if your closet door type allows it.
  • If the closet is dark, add LED strip lighting under shelves or battery-operated puck lights for better visibility.

This project is part of our One Room Challenge makeover series. Over the next weeks I’ll share updates on the bedroom, including the new feature wall color and other design details.
