Hide Wall Lamp Cord Quickly: Step-by-Step Guide

Learn the quick and simple method for hiding a wall lamp cord using an easy, paintable wall cord cover.

I had one small task left after finishing our Boho Master Bedroom project. Although the room had been completed for months, the visible lamp cords bothered me every time I walked in.

The white cords from our wall lamp fixtures contrasted sharply against the black-painted bedroom wall and needed a discreet solution.

The good news: it’s a fast, inexpensive fix that required less than 10 minutes of hands-on time (plus drying time for paint) and made a big visual difference.

Supplies You’ll Need

  • Pre-primed paintable cord cover sized to fit your cord
  • Wall paint that matches your wall color
  • Hacksaw or fine-tooth saw to cut the cord cover to length
  • Small paintbrush suitable for trim and small surfaces
  • Ruler or tape measure and a pencil for marking
  • Optional: a hairdryer to speed up paint drying

Step 1: Measure and cut the cord cover

The white cords of our wall lamps stood out against the dark color of the wall.

Measure the visible length of cord you want to conceal and add a small allowance for tucking the cord into the cover. For our installation, most of the cord was hidden behind the headboard, so 12-inch sections worked well. Use a hacksaw or fine-tooth saw to make a clean, straight cut.

Step 2: Paint the cord cover to match the wall

Since the covers are pre-primed, a couple of thin coats of your wall paint will give the best match. Apply two light coats, allowing each coat to dry fully before the next. If you’re short on time, you can carefully use a hairdryer on low heat to speed drying, but avoid overheating the plastic.

Step 3: Insert the cord into the cover

Once the paint is completely dry, gently open the cord cover and slip the lamp cord inside. Make sure the cord sits flat and isn’t pinched. Tuck the cord into the cover so it sits flush and the cover closes cleanly against the wall.

Step 4: Adhere the cover to the wall

Most cord covers come with an adhesive backing. Remove the backing and press the cover firmly to the wall in the desired position. If the entire length of adhesive isn’t needed, you can remove smaller sections from top and bottom as I did—about 1½ inches at each end—while leaving the center intact. Press along the length to ensure good contact. For extra hold on textured or painted surfaces, consider applying a small amount of construction adhesive on the back before mounting, but use caution to avoid damaging paint if you plan to remove the cover later.

And that’s it—finally finished!

This simple project keeps the lines clean and draws attention to the room’s design instead of the cord. If you’re working on a bedroom makeover, hiding visible cords is one of the easiest updates for a more polished finish.

Tips and Troubleshooting

  • For a nearly invisible result, match the paint sheen of your wall; eggshell or matte finishes usually blend best on interior walls.
  • Measure twice before cutting. It’s easier to trim a little more than to splice pieces back together.
  • If the cord runs near a door frame or baseboard, position the cover so it lines up with architectural lines for a seamless look.
  • For removable solutions, use adhesive strips rated for wall-safe use rather than permanent glue.
  • If the wall surface is textured, press firmly and allow adhesive to set for a few hours to ensure the cover adheres securely.

Estimated Time and Yield

  • Yield: Conceals two cord sections (depends on length purchased)
  • Prep Time: 5 minutes
  • Hands-on Time: 5–10 minutes
  • Paint Drying Time: up to 1 hour depending on conditions
  • Total Time: about 1 hour plus drying time
