Why September Is My Favorite Season
There’s something to love about every season, but without a doubt September has my heart. The month has a gentle way of combining the warmth of summer with the quiet promise of autumn, and for me that makes it the most comforting and inspiring time of year.
Simple pleasures that make September special
The reasons I love this month are small, sensory, and rooted in everyday life. It’s the clear blue skies and bright, soft sunlight that feel both energizing and calm at the same time.

Hydrangea bushes still heavy with blooms offer a last flourish of late-summer color before the gardens begin their slow seasonal change. Their rounded shapes and muted shades are a gentle reminder to slow down and take in the view.

Blackberry patches along hedgerows make me smile—picking berries on a sunny afternoon feels like a small celebration of the harvest. There’s a satisfying mix of sweetness and a little tartness that reminds me of slow, simple food traditions.

Making jam—hot, fragrant, thickening sugar and fruit—fills the kitchen with an aroma that transforms ordinary days into something cozy and memorable. Jars of jam lined up on the counter feel like captured sunshine, ready to brighten breakfasts and snacks.

Then there are the apples—round, crisp, and hanging in tree tops, waiting to be picked. The act of harvesting fruit feels like participating in the season’s natural rhythm. Whether they become pies, sauces, or simply a snack, apples bring that unmistakable autumnal comfort.

Back to routine—and why I welcome it
September also marks a return to more predictable routines after the busy, sometimes chaotic days of summer. There’s a comforting structure that comes with the school year: schedules settle, activities find their places, and the house gradually returns to order.
Today was our boys’ first day of school. The house has a lighter feel now that the long, busy days are shifting into a steadier rhythm. One of the first tasks I tackled post-summer was the ever-present mountain of laundry—washing, drying, folding, and redistributing clothes.

There’s something quietly satisfying about airing sheets and hanging clothes outside on a sunny September day. The breeze dries them crisp and the sunlight gives everything a fresh, clean scent that machine-drying just can’t match.
Why these moments matter
These small, repeated rituals—the jam-making, the berry-picking, the early school mornings, the clothes on the line—add up to a sense of home and continuity. They’re not dramatic, but they’re meaningful: markers of time, seasons, and family life. September has a way of holding both endings and beginnings in one gentle fold. The long days of summer leave their warmth behind, and autumn’s cooler comfort creeps in, bringing new routines and renewed appreciation for simple things.
