Day 4 of a 31-day series: “31 Ways to Make Home Uniquely You.” This post is part of a larger collection of ideas and inspiration to help you shape a home that reflects who you are.
I used to be anxious about defining my decorating style. Was I traditional, classic, modern, country farmhouse, beach cottage, or shabby chic? With so many options, I worried I might mix styles incorrectly or commit some design faux pas.
Discovering a wide range of home decor blogs changed that for me. Instead of stressing over labels, I started to jot down the things I truly loved. Over time I assembled an inspiration file that now anchors every project I take on. It’s my go-to starting point whenever I begin to plan a room or refresh a space.

Creating an inspiration file is simple and effective. Collect images, clippings, fabric swatches, color chips, and notes. When you gather the visuals that make your heart skip a beat, patterns begin to emerge. You’ll recognize recurring colors, textures, and design elements that point toward a cohesive direction for your home.
Here are some reliable sources of inspiration that helped me—and can help you—define a decorating approach that feels right and personal:
1. Books and magazines
Printed books and magazines still have a unique value. There’s something tactile about turning pages, dog-earing favorite spreads, and circling a vignette that resonates. As you browse, notice which images make you say, “Yes—this!” Over time you’ll see the brands and publications that consistently appeal to you. For me, Pottery Barn, Restoration Hardware, and Country Living often capture the casual, comfortable look I love. Others may prefer the sleeker, modern aesthetic found in magazines like Architectural Digest. The important thing is to pay attention to what consistently attracts you.
2. Pinterest
Pinterest is an invaluable tool for collecting and organizing inspiration. When you see a photo you love—on a blog, a website, or in a magazine—pin it to a dedicated board. Later, when you’re ready to tackle a room or a specific project, you’ll have a curated gallery of ideas to consult. A well-organized Pinterest board can highlight trends in your taste and make it easier to combine elements thoughtfully.

3. Your closet
Your wardrobe can be a surprising mirror for your home style. The way you dress—your preferred colors, fabrics, and how you combine pieces—often reflects the atmosphere you’ll feel comfortable creating at home. If you put outfits together with confidence and flair, you can translate that sense of style into rooms. Think of decorating a space the same way you compose an outfit: balance, proportion, color, and texture all matter.
Rather than obsessing over a single label or insisting your home fit neatly into one category, allow your personal tastes to guide you. Mixing elements can produce a fresh, layered look: pair a traditional piece with something shabby chic, or add a modern accent to a farmhouse setting. The most important measure of success is whether you love the result.
For my own home I’ve embraced a relaxed blend: a little traditional, a touch of beach cottage, hints of country farmhouse, and a sprinkle of shabby chic. I love jeans and bare feet, and my space reflects that comfortable, lived-in vibe. In the end, your style doesn’t have to fit a single name—if it feels right to you, it is right.
