DIY Christmas Tree Ideas

Decorating the Christmas tree is a cherished tradition. Over the years our trees have taken on many looks, from rustic to shabby chic. Involving children in simple projects makes the process even more special.

White and rustic tree decorations you can make

burlap star tree topper

A burlap and flour-sack star tree topper is a great rustic project. This one was born during a season of storms and power outages, when quiet evenings by the woodstove inspired a homemade, prairie-style look. It’s made from leftover cardboard, burlap and hot glue, and it sat proudly atop our tree for many years.

ruffle garland

A simple ruffle garland can be made from strips of torn cotton fabric. Gather and ruffle long lengths to weave around your tree like ribbon—an inexpensive way to add texture and charm.

shabby chic bird ornament

Shabby chic bird ornaments made from scrap fabrics, burlap and vintage appliqué flowers are fun to stitch or glue together. They look lovely on the tree, can be tied onto gifts for a handmade touch, or grouped into a mobile for a baby gift.

paper star ornaments

Origami paper star ornaments folded from old book pages or hymnals add a nostalgic, rustic feel. They’re surprisingly easy to make and work beautifully in clusters or as tree accents.

DIY Christmas Ball Ornaments

The “Winter Wonderland” ornament is a child-friendly project: clear ornaments filled with faux snow and tiny scene elements. Most supplies are inexpensive and simple to assemble.

chalkboard look ornament

Chalkboard-style ornaments can be painted to look like real chalkboard surfaces, with painted “chalk” lettering that won’t rub off. They’re a great way to personalize ornaments with names, dates or messages.

wooden ornaments

Handmade wooden ornaments are classic and timeless. If you don’t want to cut wood yourself, premade wood slices or painted wooden shapes provide a perfect canvas for simple painting and stamping techniques.

DIY Christmas Crafts for Your Home

Unexpected materials can yield beautiful results—coffee filters layered into a small tree create a soft, fluffy look with minimal effort. This is a great craft for using everyday supplies in a creative way.

burlap Christmas stockings

Burlap stockings are another DIY favorite. Decorate them with ruffles, buttons and fabric flowers for a vintage, handmade feel. These are simple to sew and make thoughtful personalized gifts.

Wooden Signs and Farmhouse Decor

rustic wood sign

Rustic wooden signs work well in farmhouse-style Christmas decor. You can create signs from reclaimed wood and use free printable word art or simple painting techniques to add phrases like “Joy to the World” or “Merry Christmas” without complex stenciling.

wood slice Christmas tree sign

A wood-slice Christmas tree sign uses painted background boards with glued wood slices to form a tree silhouette. It’s a quick, rustic project that looks great as wall art or a handmade gift.

painted thrift store canvas

Transform an old thrift-store canvas with acrylic paint and simple techniques to create new seasonal wall decor. Upcycling like this turns someone’s castoff into a charming holiday piece.

Christmas Centerpieces & Table Setting Ideas

Gathering around the table for holiday meals is central to many traditions. Simple centerpieces, napkin arrangements and a few handmade accents can make your table feel festive without a lot of fuss.
