Outdoor Entertaining Gazebo and Garage Makeover
A while back I mentioned helping a friend reorganize her basement. Since then I’ve been visiting her every Thursday that our schedules allow. Those afternoons—what I now call “Thursday House”—have become a real highlight for both of us. We work, we laugh, and we take coffee breaks. So far our projects have included an office, the kitchen, the laundry room and pantry, the dining room, the living room, and a guest room. Most recently we tackled the outdoor entertaining gazebo and the garage, and it turned into a bright, practical space perfect for gatherings.
Yesterday the sun even made an appearance, and we had an absolutely delightful day completing the transformation. We moved and rearranged furniture and accessories until the layout felt right and flowed naturally for entertaining and everyday use.

The covered area divides naturally into two zones: the outdoor kitchen in the back, which includes a barbecue and a sink and now a long table for buffet service, and an outdoor living room where guests can relax and socialize. Creating distinct zones like this makes it easy to host large groups while keeping food prep and serving separate from lounging areas.

At the far end we kept a large, practical picnic table that works for family-style meals and casual seating. Having extra folding chairs stacked nearby in the garage makes it quick and simple to accommodate additional guests. With the current setup, this space comfortably handles 20 or more people when needed.

We added greenery, colorful flowers, and a few pops of red and yellow to bring life and visual interest to the space. Natural accents and container plants help soften hard surfaces and make the area feel more inviting. One of my favorite touches was a basket of hens-and-chicks succulents that sits on a low table as an understated focal point.

My friend loved a simple shelf we styled with buckets filled with freshly cut rhododendrons; it adds both fragrance and a cottage-style charm to the barbecue zone. We also introduced a sunny yellow cart beside the grill — both decorative and highly practical. The top decor can be removed quickly to create extra counter space when cooking for a crowd.

Small styling choices made a big difference: layered textiles on seating for comfort, weatherproof pillows for color, well-placed planters for rhythm and scale, and clearly defined circulation paths so guests can move easily between the kitchen, dining, and seating zones. We also kept storage in mind, tucking extra chairs and serving trays into the garage so they are handy but out of direct sight when not needed.

With the layout finalized and decorative accents in place, the whole area now feels cohesive, welcoming, and ready for a big family gathering. All it needs is a stretch of sunny weather so everyone can enjoy the space outdoors a bit longer into the season.
