Transform a Plain Cupboard into Clever Pantry Organization

Pantry organization for a small kitchen is tricky—especially when there isn’t really a pantry. Here’s how we turned an ordinary cupboard into a functional pantry.

How to Create Awesome Pantry Organization in a Small Cupboard

Can I share a secret with you?

For years I didn’t love my townhouse kitchen. It’s small, awkward, and never felt quite right. I organized it several times since we moved in, but each effort only got me part of the way there. This last time—after a more careful assessment and a few practical upgrades—everything finally clicked.

Today I’ll share the process I used to create an efficient, attractive “pantry” out of a tall corner cupboard. These ideas work well in small kitchens where traditional pantries aren’t an option.

This is the cupboard in its original, messy state.

Calling it a pantry is a bit of a stretch—the kitchen didn’t have a dedicated pantry, so we chose this tall, awkward cupboard at the room’s corner and made it work.

1.Turn ordinary cupboard shelves into pull-out shelves.

Early on, my husband grew tired of excavating cans from the depths of the cupboard, so he installed sliding drawers. Those pull-out shelves are a game changer—sudden visibility and easy access make daily life so much simpler.

He followed a DIY slide-out shelves tutorial as his guide during the build. If you have the tools and some basic woodworking skills, this is one of the best upgrades you can make in a small kitchen.

Once the hardware was in place, I stepped back to evaluate what actually worked and what didn’t.

2. Figure out what elements of pantry organization work for you.

Take inventory of what functions well so you can keep those elements in place. In our case, the things that were working included:

  1. The pull-out shelves my husband installed.
  2. The microwave perch, which saved counter space.
  3. The top shelf storage for large round chargers that are just reachable when I stand on tiptoe.
  4. Cookbooks and frequently used recipes placed at an accessible level.

3.Determine working systems that don’t work for you.

Just as important is identifying what doesn’t work. For us the problems were clear:

  • Baskets perched above the microwave holding dish towels and rags weren’t attractive or very functional.
  • We had used valuable drawer space for items that are rarely needed, which wasted prime real estate.

With those positives and negatives in mind, I began arranging and rearranging zones until the cupboard made sense for how we live and cook.

4.Arrange and rearrange so the area is organized to suit your specific needs.

Here’s how the cupboard came together:

5. Add pretty touches.

I kept the features that worked but made them look and feel better. I painted the drawer fronts of the pantry shelves and added metal label holders to create a neat, cohesive look.

The chargers returned to the top shelf, with seldom-used cookbooks tucked beside them. Water and juice pitchers moved to the back of an upper shelf while taller grocery items sit in front for easy reach.

Two attractive totes now sit above the microwave, holding items that had previously cluttered a drawer. With those items relocated, dish towels can be folded neatly and rolling pins tucked into a narrow space behind them.

Turning negatives into positives has made this cupboard so much more functional. It’s now a pantry that works with our habits and looks inviting.

The small finishing touch that delights me most is an apron given to me by my sister-in-law, hung on the side of the cupboard. Its striped pattern and the memory attached to it add warmth and personality to the space.
