Upholstered Headboard Makeover: DIY Tips to Transform Yours

Upholstered Headboard Makeover with Urbane Bronze

Here’s a refreshed and more polished version of the headboard I recently updated. I first shared a sneak peek of the project and, while the early shots showed progress, the final result has a much cleaner, more finished look.

Once the bedroom walls were painted, I decided the headboard needed an update to match the new palette. The bed frame was built by my husband years ago; we intentionally designed it so the upholstery could be removed and replaced when we wanted a new look.

For many years the frame had been painted white and covered with tan upholstery. To give it a fresh, modern farmhouse feel, I disassembled the headboard and repainted the frame in Urbane Bronze by Sherwin-Williams. That deep, warm neutral instantly grounds the piece and complements a wide variety of bedding and décor.

After painting the frame, I added new fabric. Rather than removing the original upholstery entirely, I stapled the new material directly over it. This approach created additional padding and made the reupholstery process simpler and faster. The fabric I used was a clearance find, which kept the project budget-friendly.

The technique I used is similar to what I applied when recovering chair cushions: pull the fabric taut, staple along the inner frame, smooth out any folds, and trim excess material. Working in short sections helped to keep the fabric even and avoid puckering. I also added some extra batting where needed for a softer, more tailored appearance.

If you’re tackling a similar project, a few practical tips:

  • Disassemble the headboard if possible—removing it from the bed makes painting and upholstering much easier.
  • Choose a paint color that complements your room’s palette; a darker neutral like Urbane Bronze can provide contrast without overwhelming the space.
  • Staple new fabric over the existing layer for added cushion and to save time, but inspect the underlying materials first to ensure they’re in good condition.
  • Work from the center outward on each side to keep fabric even, and use plenty of staples for a secure finish.
  • Trim excess fabric and tuck corners neatly before final assembly to achieve a professional look.

The messy middle of a makeover is part of the process—here’s a look at the headboard during reupholstery, when things were in progress and a bit chaotic.

And here’s the transformed headboard after reassembly and styling. The Urbane Bronze frame and the new fabric give the bed a refreshed, modern farmhouse vibe that feels both cozy and updated.

We’re thrilled with how the project turned out. The combination of the darker painted frame and the new upholstery creates a simple but striking focal point in the room. Using affordable fabric and a thoughtful approach to reupholstering made this an accessible weekend update that transformed the overall look without replacing the entire bed.
