Wreath Makeover and Christmas Dining Room Reveal

Holiday Birdcage and Silver Wreath DIY

It all began with a simple wooden birdcage and a handful of beautiful aqua and iridescent glass ornaments I received from dear friends. Their gift inspired me to create a small, sparkly vignette for the dining room buffet, a place where the delicate ornaments could be showcased and admired.

The ornaments were fragile and oh-so-pretty, so I handled them with care. I tied each one inside the birdcage at varying lengths so they would catch the light differently and create a layered, ethereal effect. The birdcage felt like the perfect vessel—vintage, airy, and just a little bit whimsical.

Finding the right backdrop for the birdcage became the next creative challenge. The dining room buffet seemed like a natural home, but the wall behind needed something to anchor the display. That’s when I remembered an old wreath tucked away in storage.

wreath before

The wreath had been purchased years earlier. What was once lifelike fruit and fresh-looking greenery had faded over time and now appeared noticeably artificial. I removed all of the faux fruit and foliage to reveal the plain base beneath, which gave me a blank canvas for a quick refresh.

In my stash of spray paints I found an “aluminum” finish and a can of gloss white. The aluminum wasn’t exactly the bright, mirror-like silver I had imagined, but it had enough sheen to create a modern, wintry look. I sprayed the wreath base and the remaining elements, then added accent touches in gloss white to a few leaves and pine cones to introduce contrast and depth.

After painting, the wreath took on a silvery, frosted appearance that complemented the aqua ornaments. It felt more current and cohesive with the cool-toned palette I was working toward.

I planned to add a wide, gauzy white ribbon as a finishing touch once I was back in town, to give the wreath a soft, elegant bow and to better integrate it with the rest of the vignette.

With the wreath refreshed, I returned the birdcage to the buffet and arranged the scene. I placed the painted wreath on the wall as a shimmering backdrop and positioned the birdcage in front to create a layered holiday display. A small bowl collected leftover wreath accents and the tiny decorative bird that came with the cage, adding texture and interest to the tabletop.

The fluffy white tabletop tree beside the bowl was a last-minute addition. It was a quick DIY made from everyday materials to introduce more white into the vignette and balance the silver and aqua color scheme. (Hint: it involved coffee filters, so plan accordingly if you make one yourself.)

I’d never decorated for Christmas using this particular palette of silver, white, and aqua before. Switching to a cooler color scheme felt refreshing and playful—decorating outside your usual comfort zone can produce surprisingly pretty results.

The centerpiece on the buffet brings everything together: the birdcage hung with glass ornaments, the silver wreath behind it, the bowl of wreath remnants and bird, and the little white tree for height and softness. The combination creates a cohesive holiday vignette with a light, frosted feel—ideal for a dining room that calls for understated elegance.

On the practical side, today was also our big grocery shopping day, and picking up a Christmas tree was on the list. Little decisions like whether to choose a frosted, flocked, or traditional green tree will help determine how this buffet vignette evolves—whether I lean into more silver and white accents or contrast them with warmer, richer tones.

Winking smile

If you’re looking for fresh holiday decor ideas, try combining unexpected elements: a vintage birdcage as a display, painted wreaths for a modern metallic touch, and simple DIY trees to add texture. For more seasonal inspiration, I have other projects with a similar silver-and-white aesthetic and a twinkly bookcase vignette that explore variations on this theme.
