10-Piece Fall Capsule Wardrobe from Old Navy

Updated September 2020 with current availability. How the 10-piece fall wardrobe from Old Navy can work for a versatile mix-and-match season.

I’ve admired bloggers who do dressing-room try-ons and report back on fit and styling. I’ve learned so many practical tips from those posts, but I hadn’t tried it myself until a recent trip to Old Navy.

My husband and I drove 1½ hours to the store on Labour Day. I had planned my shopping list carefully, but everything changed when I saw the fitting-room line stretched about fifteen people deep.

When I reached the attendant with my cart full of pieces, she kindly informed me,

“Ma’am, you can only take ten items into the fitting room at a time.”

My heart raced. I quickly selected ten items and stepped into the fitting room. To my relief, every one of those ten pieces fit well and felt great, so I didn’t need to go back for the rest of the cart. The ten items I chose became the foundation for this fall capsule I’m sharing here.

A few years ago I discovered the idea of a 10-piece wardrobe—adopted from a French approach to style—and it changed how I shop. The concept is simple: select pieces that mix and match so you can create a variety of outfits without a closet full of items. If you prefer different colors than the ones I chose, simply swap them for shades you love.

Start with Jeans and a T-Shirt

Jeans are the backbone of a casual capsule. I chose two pairs of Mid-Rise Rockstar Super Skinny jeans (regular length, size 6). They’re a bit long for my 5’1½” frame, but rolling the hem works fine. A simple polka-dot swing top made a great layering piece; it looks cute tucked or untucked. I also found a pair of brown mules on impulse and ended up loving them—an easy shoe that pairs with nearly every outfit.

Pick a Sweater in a Color You Love

Open-front sweaters are perfect for layering. I’m partial to long cardigans even though I’m short; they add instant polish and elongation. The one I tried was a small but I’d likely size up for a roomier fit. Old Navy offers many colorways, so choose a hue that complements the rest of your capsule.

Look for Tops with Interesting Drape and Details

Life’s too short for boring tops. I like blouses with detail and movement because they make simple jeans look more polished. A pin-tuck linen-blend shirt was comfortable and stylish, though a camisole or tank may be needed underneath since the front was slightly low. That style also came in a beautiful deep rose, which I thought would be lovely for fall.

Find patterned tops with colors you love:

Pink pixie pants with plaid shirt and mustard vest

I adored a plaid tunic and paired it with pink Pixie pants. The tunic looked great untucked and offered a relaxed silhouette, though it tended to gap slightly at the bust—something I often need to watch for with button-downs. The Pixie pants were comfortable, and they’re available in many colors and patterns if you want a pop of color in your capsule. I finished this look with a puff vest for added warmth and texture.

Try a Dress to Transition into a New Season

I was surprised by a dress that had an elastic back and a flattering drape. It was fully lined and slightly longer in back for good coverage. It proved that a single dress can be styled multiple ways and make the transition from late summer into fall.

Note: in a later season I also tried a black jumpsuit to serve a similar role in my capsule wardrobe.

Pair a Sleeveless Dress with a Sweater for Cooler Days

Layering is the easiest way to extend summer pieces into cooler weather. A sleeveless dress becomes fall-ready with a long cardigan or lightweight sweater layered over it—simple, comfortable, and stylish.

Add a Skirt for Additional Outfit Options

I tried a corduroy mini skirt that I’d been eyeing for months. On a shorter frame it wasn’t overly short, and it would be adorable with tights and tall boots, or layered with a mustard vest instead of a cardigan. Adding a skirt to your capsule multiplies outfit possibilities, especially when paired with patterned tops, sweaters, or vests.

There you have it: ten fall wardrobe pieces from Old Navy that mix and match to create a season’s worth of outfits—jeans, pants, a skirt, a dress, layered tops, a cardigan, a vest, and a versatile pair of shoes.

Notes on Finding These Items and Styling Tips

Not every specific item remains available as styles rotate, but the general pieces and silhouettes are easy to find each season at Old Navy and many other retailers. When building a capsule, focus on a neutral base and two or three accent colors, choose a variety of textures, and pick pieces that layer well together. This approach simplifies dressing and reduces decision fatigue.

If choosing clothes feels overwhelming, a styling course or guided challenge helped me gain confidence and refine my personal style. Group styling challenges and online communities can also provide inspiration and accountability as you build a cohesive wardrobe.
