Hunt for a Couch: Lessons from Sofa Shopping and a Seasonal Shift
The official hunt-for-a-couch season has begun, and my husband and I dove in headfirst. We spent several afternoons scouring showrooms, evaluating size, style, and—most importantly—comfort. We tried to be methodical: measuring doorways, imagining how fabrics would look in our space, and subjecting every contender to the all-important comfort test.
Because I’m 5’2″ and he’s a solid 6’0″, finding a sofa that feels right for both of us turned out to be a real challenge. Most seats left me with my feet dangling an inch or two off the floor, or they fit me perfectly while the cushion depth hit him mid-thigh. Inevitably, we’d erupt in laughter at the realization that the ideal couch for both of us may not exist in the same showroom.
Helpful salespeople would approach, kindly offering advice and asking questions. We listened, asked a few practical questions, and played the part of undecided customers until we truly were undecided. This is our first time buying a new couch for this home, so everything felt fresh—and a little overwhelming.
Choices can be paralyzing. Hearing “You can choose from 800 fabrics” made my eyes glaze over, and once financing options entered the conversation I found myself ready to escape the store entirely. The good news is that I did find a dream couch: a style and fabric that felt perfect. The bad news is that it belongs in a much larger house than our little townhouse. For now, that beautiful sofa has to remain a fantasy.
Rather than continue the stress of custom orders, long waits, and decisions I’m not ready to finalize, I decided to press pause on the couch hunt. I’ll keep loving our faithful, worn-in sofa a little longer and turn my attention to something more uplifting: Christmas decorating. Thinking about twinkling lights and seasonal accents felt like the right remedy for decision fatigue.
Before I haul out holiday decorations, I set myself a small rule—finish unpacking every remaining box. I’m almost there; just four boxes stand between me and a little festive cheer. If I can get those unpacked today, I’ll reward myself by stringing a few lights and arranging simple decorations that will brighten the living room and help disguise our dated couch until the perfect replacement is actually practical.

I’ve learned a few practical takeaways while couch shopping that might help anyone else feeling overwhelmed by the process:
- Measure twice: Know the exact dimensions of your space, doorways, and stairwells before falling in love with a piece.
- Test the seat depth and cushion height in person, and keep your partner’s height in mind—comfort is personal.
- Bring fabric swatches home to test in your lighting; what looks great under store lights can read very differently at home.
- Set realistic expectations about budget and timing—custom orders add wait time and often complexity.
- If you’re in a small space, prioritize scale and proportion over trends so the piece feels at home long-term.
For now, small holiday touches will lift spirits and buy me time. Twinkly lights, a cozy throw, and a few well-placed pillows can transform a room quickly and inexpensively—perfect for a season where comfort matters most.

And a quick personal note: I’m sharing one of my favorite recipes—Cheater Chicken Cordon Bleu—over on the Sweet Tea and Saving Grace blog. It’s super simple to prepare and tastes delicious, which is exactly the kind of easy comfort food I love during busy decorating days.
So, couch shopping is officially on hold. I’ll keep measuring, dreaming, and learning, but for now I’ll focus on making our little townhouse feel merry and welcoming, even if the sofa is a charming relic. After all, the right atmosphere and a few seasonal touches can make any space feel like home until the perfect couch finds its way to us.
