Six smart ways to save money on a farmhouse bedroom makeover

1. Define a feature wall with paint

Instead of investing in expensive shiplap or high-end wallpaper, we created a striking feature wall with paint. I initially looked at wallpaper options and even considered faux shiplap, but the specific wallpaper I loved cost nearly $195 per roll—far more than I was willing to spend for this space.

Using a quality paint in a fresh, farmhouse-friendly shade delivered the same visual impact for a fraction of the cost. For our feature wall we used Sherwin-Williams “Silver Strand” (approx. $50 CAD). The surrounding walls are painted in Benjamin Moore “Simply White” (also about $50), creating contrast and depth without the high price tag.

2. Use furniture creatively for closet organization

Built-in closets and custom shelving are lovely, but they can blow a budget fast. Instead, we repurposed furniture we already owned to provide storage and visual interest in the closet. I had hoped to add wallpaper and a chandelier, and I even tried a painted stencil treatment, but in the end a fresh coat of paint plus existing furniture and decor gave the best, most affordable result.

Paint used: leftover Sherwin-Williams Silver Strand from the feature wall. Decorative item: Bird Jewelry Tree by Torre & Tagus (existing item).

3. Invest only where it matters

Not every decorative purchase is worth splurging on. I learned this the hard way with throw pillows. I tried inexpensive fabric thinking it would suffice, but the results were underwhelming. A quick visit to a discount home store (Winners) found two sets of pillows in the exact colors I wanted. Those affordable, ready-made pillows made a dramatic difference to the overall palette and feel of the room.

Source example: two gray trellis pillows by Envogue plus two small rectangular pillows, all from Winners for about $50 total.

4. Buy sample-size paint for small projects

For the dresser repaint and the headboard refresh I purchased sample-size cans instead of full gallons. These small containers were enough for the projects and left a little leftover for touch-ups—while costing a tiny fraction of a full can.

Paints used: Sherwin-Williams “Alabaster” for the dresser and “Urbane Bronze” for the headboard. Both were sample-size and on sale for a combined total of around $17.

5. Take your time shopping for décor

Patience pays off. I almost never buy décor at full price; waiting for clearance and sales helped me gather statement pieces for very low prices. Small, well-chosen items can elevate a room more than expensive, generic décor.

Examples of finds: set of three mirrors from Winners for $9, a large gold clock at Winners for $16, an Ikea bar with tin cup holders (already owned), and a driftwood side table we made ourselves.

6. Repurpose and re-envision what you already own

When decorating the nightstands and styling the feature wall, I dug through the garage and pulled together items that had been used elsewhere in the house. Reassigning accessories, artwork, and textiles can make a space feel brand new without buying anything extra.

Textiles and sources: bedspread and shams from Superstore (purchased previously), a striped canvas throw found on clearance at Fabricland, an Ikea curtain rod (from prior use), and older curtains whose original source I no longer recall.

Total budget for the makeover: $192.00

With thoughtful choices—painting a feature wall, repurposing furniture, being selective about purchases, buying small amounts of paint, and hunting for clearance items—you can create a warm, modern farmhouse master bedroom without a major investment. Take your time, invest in the pieces that truly matter to you, and use what you already own to pull the look together.
