Garage Makeover Progress: Storage and Layout Updates

Small Garage Organization: Our Weekend Makeover

I realized I’ve never properly shown our garage before, and that felt like a missing piece of the home tour. Today I’m sharing the honest truth: our garage has been doing more than housing cars. Without a basement or crawl space, this room has had to take on a lot of responsibility, and for a long time it looked like the place where everything unwanted ended up.

Over the years it became a catchall for seasonal decorations, cleaning supplies, extra decor, spare chairs, tools, paint supplies, scooters, Rubbermaid totes and bins, and even a freezer. We also kept larger household items there that didn’t have space inside the house — end tables, old windows, craft supplies like stencils, and a Singer sewing machine. It was functional in that everything was technically in one place, but it was not organized or easy to use.

The clutter made the garage cold and uninviting during winter. No matter how many rugs I layered on the concrete, the room felt chilly, and the mess made it discouraging to tackle. For months I would start to sort and then stop, overwhelmed by the sheer volume of things that needed attention.

Last weekend we finally opened the garage door and committed to a proper cleanout. This was a focused effort: we sorted items into keep, donate, sell, and recycle piles, and grouped similar things together so they would be easier to find and store. Clearing the floor was the first priority so we could see how much usable space we actually had. The result is a dramatic improvement in both appearance and functionality.

One of the best immediate wins was making the freezer accessible again. Previously I would have to navigate around chairs and stacked boxes just to get to it. Now there’s a clear path and I can reach what we need without risking a stubbed toe or knocking something over. Small changes like that make daily life easier and more pleasant.

We also organized all the tools on a single wall so they’re visible and within reach. Seeing the tools lined up has the double benefit of saving time and reducing frustration — no more digging through boxes to find the right wrench or screwdriver. Grouping items by use and storing them where they make the most sense is a simple organizing principle that immediately improves how a space functions.

This project is part one of a small garage transformation. We’ve cleared the floor, consolidated storage, and reorganized the essentials. It isn’t a designer garage makeover — we haven’t rushed into expensive finishes — but the practical changes are meaningful. The space feels lighter, more usable, and less like a storage battleground.

Looking ahead, we have a few plans to make the garage even more functional: adding efficient storage solutions like labeled bins and shelving, improving lighting so it’s easier to work in the space, and considering insulation options to keep the room more comfortable year-round. Those steps will come as we gather the right materials and time them with other home projects.

For now, I’m thrilled to walk in and actually see the floor. That simple, satisfying view is a reminder that small, focused efforts can make a big difference in how a home functions. If you’re tackling your own garage, start with sorting and clearing the floor — the momentum from that alone makes the rest of the job feel achievable.

Thank you for taking this quick tour of our garage refresh. I’ll share updates as we move through the next phases of organizing and improving the space, including the storage solutions that work best for our small garage setup.
