3 Budget Ways to Turn Everyday Home Items into Holiday Decor

Update November 2022: Although this post was written a few years ago, I found myself doing the same things while decorating our home for Christmas this year. I prefer to use the same base of everyday decor and then add a little holiday flair. These ideas may be helpful for you, too!

When a new season arrives, I like to refresh my home so the rooms reflect the weather and the mood of the holidays. Christmas is my favorite time to decorate, but buying all-new items every year isn’t realistic for most of us. Budget-friendly decorating pushes creativity, and often the best displays come from rethinking what you already own.

While decorating our townhouse living and dining areas, the dining room came together quickly—cheerful aqua blue and red ornaments on the tree and a sparkling buffet made the space feel festive. The living room, however, was more challenging. Digging through the Christmas totes didn’t produce a look I loved, so I turned to everyday decor I already had. The result was simple, fast, and easy on the budget.

If you want to refresh your home for the holidays without overspending, these practical, creative tips will help you turn ordinary pieces into beautiful holiday decor.

3 ways to transform everyday decor into Christmas decor

  1. 1. Fill a tray with seasonal items

Trays make excellent focal points for holiday vignettes. I used pine cones and faux greenery to fill a narrow tray on the coffee table, but you can use almost anything that evokes the season. Try mandarins, pomegranates, ornaments, small bottle-brush trees with a sprinkle of faux snow, or an arrangement of jingle bells. Grouping a few candles with these fillers adds height and warmth. The tray keeps everything tidy and makes the display easy to move when you need the table for everyday use.

2. Add faux greenery and berries around a collection

Groupings look more intentional than scattered single items. I gathered several lanterns I’d collected over the years, placed them together on a tray, and tucked in clipped faux greenery and berries to make the grouping feel festive. This same approach works with almost any collection—teacups, candlesticks, small frames, or decorative books. Vary the heights using stacked books or boxes and weave in greenery or a strand of lights to unify the display and give it a holiday look.

If you shop thrift stores, clipped faux stems and inexpensive greenery strands are great multipurpose accents that can be reused year after year.

3. Use dishware and kitchen items as decorative fillers

Everyday kitchen pieces can become attractive displays on shelves or bookcases. I needed height on a bookcase shelf, so I layered a wooden cutting board and a round wicker placemat as a backdrop for a tall pitcher and a few ornaments. The combination created a pleasing silhouette and a subtle holiday vibe—even though most of the pieces weren’t explicitly Christmas decorations.

Think about plates, bowls, baskets, wooden boards, pitchers, and cake stands you already own. Group them with a few seasonal accents—a sprig of faux pine, a cluster of berries, or a candle—and you have instant holiday styling without buying special items.

4. Repurpose items for unexpected uses

Repurposing is one of the easiest ways to save money and add personality. A set of pretty red snowflake placemats I bought after a sale never saw a table—so I hung them on the wall as art. Think beyond an item’s intended purpose: a wooden ladder becomes a blanket display, a stack of vintage suitcases can serve as a seasonal side table, or a pretty tray can be propped up as wall decor. Reimagining items you already own often yields unique and memorable holiday decor.

Using items in new ways not only saves money but also creates a collected, layered look that feels thoughtful and personal.
