Last week I mentioned discovering a lovely new fashion blog, and I’m still excited about it. The blogger Carrie has launched a fun series called Create8 Spring, where each week she gives a theme and invites readers to pull pieces from their own closets to create looks that match. I decided to join in and style a few outfits from what I already own—perfect for sharing ideas about spring transition dressing.
Transition season is tricky: the days are longer and the weather hints at warmer times ahead, but evenings can still be chilly and some regions even have lingering snow. To make the most of this in-between period, I focused on layering, color pops, and pieces that work both for cooler mornings and milder afternoons. These looks are aimed at comfortable, wearable spring transition outfits, especially for those of us who favor classic pieces and practical styling.
One thing I noticed while pulling outfits together: I don’t actually own many pastels. Pastels are a common spring go-to, and I wondered if I should add more into my wardrobe rotation. For this exercise I worked with the pieces I already had. My first outfit began with a coral shirt I’d forgotten about. I imagined it layered under a white boyfriend-style sweater—though as it turns out, I don’t own a true white boyfriend sweater. Instead I tried the white sweater I do have.
That combination was okay, but it didn’t quite feel right to me—especially with my current sandals. I swapped the white sweater for a black one and the whole outfit suddenly felt more balanced. Darker layers can anchor brighter tops during spring transition, and black knitwear works surprisingly well with coral and warm-toned accessories.
I know sandals aren’t always weather-appropriate in early spring, but pairing them with a cozy sweater and a brighter top is a useful trick when the temperature rises mid-afternoon. For colder moments, keep a lightweight jacket or a trench handy. Layering a thin coat over a sweater avoids bulk but still provides warmth for the cooler parts of the day.
Another look I pulled together used a pink scarf as the focal point. Scarves are one of my favorite transition accessories because they add instant warmth and a pop of color without committing to a full pastel wardrobe. This pink scarf brightens neutrals and makes otherwise simple outfits feel intentional.
This scarf look is something I’ve probably worn through the winter, but it remains practical for spring transition: it keeps your neck warm in a draft, layers well over a sweater or light jacket, and coordinates with both denim and dressier trousers. I paired it with pieces that are already in my closet to create a cohesive outfit suitable for errands or casual gatherings.
When the weather feels ambiguous—part spring, part winter—I rely on a few go-to strategies: layer thin pieces so you can add or remove as needed; choose one bright or warm-hued accessory to lift neutrals; and keep versatile footwear that can bridge cool mornings and warmer afternoons. Light knit sweaters, scarves, a reliable denim jacket or trench, and comfortable shoes make transitioning much easier.
Joining a series like Create8 Spring is a great way to rediscover items you already own and see new combinations. Whether you’re aiming for pastel-inspired looks or simply want practical, stylish outfits that work through fickle spring weather, the goal is to build outfits that feel authentic and comfortable.
What do you reach for when spring feels like a tease—part winter, part sun? I’d love to hear your favorite layering tricks.
Have a pretty day!
