DIY Laptop Stand End Table: A Compact Living Room Storage Solution
This DIY laptop stand end table began as a practical solution born out of necessity. After moving into our townhouse, we quickly realized storing everyone’s tech had become a daily challenge. I found myself tiptoeing through the living room to avoid stepping on laptops—much worse than stepping on toys—and it was time to create a compact, accessible storage option that fit our small space.
While cleaning the garage last summer we rediscovered an old end table that had been given to us by a friend. It had been used in a few different spots over the years and looked like it could be repurposed into the perfect laptop stand with only a few simple modifications. Rather than starting from scratch, we adapted what we had.
My husband measured and cut two scrap pieces of plywood to serve as additional shelves inside the table. He painted those shelf pieces in Urbane Bronze and, once dry, secured them in place with screws. The extra shelving gave each laptop its own slot, keeping devices organized and easy to reach while still allowing them to remain plugged in.
Although I didn’t love the table’s original color in our living room, its function proved excellent. Once I committed to an organization mission for the house, the end table finally got the attention it deserved. I found a can of Benjamin Moore paint in the color “Navel” at a discount and repainted the piece, which refreshed the look and helped it blend seamlessly with our décor.

Now the stand sits neatly at the end of the couch where it provides a dedicated place for laptops without taking up much room. Each shelf holds a computer, and the open design lets cords reach the sofa and chairs for charging. The top drawer became the perfect catch-all for chargers, cables, speakers, mice, and other small tech accessories, keeping the living room surface clutter-free.

The transformation was straightforward: a little measuring, cutting, painting, and fastening. The result is a multipurpose living room piece that functions as an end table and a discrete tech station. The updated finish in Benjamin Moore Navel brightened the table and helped it fit better with the room’s palette, while the darker Urbane Bronze shelves add contrast and hide wear from regular use.

I love how it looks and how it functions. It solves the problem of where to store laptops in a small living area while keeping devices charged and easily accessible. The top drawer keeps cords and smaller items out of sight, so the living space feels tidier and more organized.

For anyone tackling a similar small-space storage challenge, repurposing an existing piece of furniture can be a fast, low-cost solution. Adding simple internal shelves, choosing paint colors that complement your space, and using drawers for accessories will keep technology organized and out of harm’s way. If you’re working on an organization challenge in your home, consider where multipurpose furniture could reduce clutter and make your daily routines easier.
