Decorating for Christmas is one of my favorite parts of the season. The lights, handmade ornaments and simple crafts bring back warm memories and brighten the short, cold days of winter. Over the years I’ve enjoyed creating many DIY Christmas decorations for our home, and I hope some of these ideas inspire you to try a few of them.

Decorating the Christmas tree is a cherished tradition. Over the years our trees have taken on many looks, from rustic to shabby chic. Involving children in simple projects makes the process even more special.
White and rustic tree decorations you can make
A burlap and flour-sack star tree topper is a great rustic project. This one was born during a season of storms and power outages, when quiet evenings by the woodstove inspired a homemade, prairie-style look. It’s made from leftover cardboard, burlap and hot glue, and it sat proudly atop our tree for many years.
A simple ruffle garland can be made from strips of torn cotton fabric. Gather and ruffle long lengths to weave around your tree like ribbon—an inexpensive way to add texture and charm.
Shabby chic bird ornaments made from scrap fabrics, burlap and vintage appliqué flowers are fun to stitch or glue together. They look lovely on the tree, can be tied onto gifts for a handmade touch, or grouped into a mobile for a baby gift.
