Episode 1: Show notes

My mom’s diagnosis of dementia led me to one of the most important lessons I’ve learned in life —
No matter your age or stage of life, always keep learning something new.
In this episode I share how that lesson shaped me, how it inspired this blog and podcast, and how the experience of walking alongside my mom changed the way I approach each day.

Introduction to today’s life lesson
One of my personal passions is to keep learning. That commitment to continual growth became much more than a hobby after my mother was diagnosed with dementia. Her diagnosis prompted me to research, reflect, and take new steps — and it led directly to the creation of Harbour Breeze Home.
I’m Rita Joy: a homemaker and full-time blogger who loves sharing approachable ideas for creating a warm, comfortable home. I’m a mom of three grown sons, a grandma to a delightful granddaughter, and I’ve been married for 32 years. I don’t pretend to be an expert in every area of life, but I do bring five decades of everyday experience, curiosity, and a desire to encourage others.
This episode explores how my mom’s diagnosis shifted my priorities and clarified a simple truth: learning something new, no matter how small, enriches life and can give you purpose during difficult seasons. If you find yourself wondering whether it’s too late to start something new, this episode is for you.
Today’s podcast points:
- How I processed my mom’s dementia diagnosis and what that season taught me
- The research I did about dementia and practical steps I explored
- How the commitment to “always be learning” inspired Harbour Breeze Home
- A heartfelt tribute to my mom and the legacy she left
What will be your “learn something new” thing?
As you go about your day, listen to what your heart nudges you toward. Learning something new doesn’t have to be grand or expensive. It can be a short online tutorial, a simple craft project, inviting new friends over, trying a new recipe, or researching a topic that piques your interest. Small steps build momentum — and curiosity keeps life fresh.
I’d love to hear what you choose. Share your learning goals and progress in the comments below — it’s always encouraging to hear how others are growing and trying new things.
