This was the situation with my most recent dresser undertaking.

It originated as a thrift store purchase from some time ago, already featuring paint and stenciling; it holds no personal significance or artistic merit. Nevertheless, it is a highly useful item currently serving well in our Master Bedroom.

Due to several recent relocations, it gathered numerous nicks and scratches, making a refresh necessary. I was determined to finish it! While working, I decided to share my preferred:

  • Sanding block collection
  • Any paint you prefer. Review this separate post for guidance on selecting the optimal furniture paint. Depending on the existing furniture finish, a paint primer might also be necessary. Here is some advice for deciding, “Must I prime furniture before painting?”
  • Paintbrush – This Wooster paintbrush is unquestionably my favorite; it excels at cutting in on walls and is equally great for furniture tasks. I appreciate the “handle-less” design because it feels so comfortable in my grip.
  • Small foam roller set, optional – I painted this specific dresser using only a brush. Nevertheless, for larger, flat areas, using a foam roller can be fast and convenient.

Quick Tips for Painting a Dresser!

1. Avoid moving it throughout the entire house; instead, paint it in the garage.

Simply place a few old towels beneath it and paint it directly in the room where it will reside.

2. Briefly sand the entire piece using sanding blocks.

Do not dedicate excessive time to this; merely roughen the surface so the new paint adheres properly.

Sanding advice: Begin with the coarsest grits (such as 60-80) and progress to finer ones. However, it is vital that the item is spotless, free from grime, dust, and grease. After sanding, wipe the piece with a damp cloth or tack cloth.

3.Select paint that incorporates a built-in primer.

If time is limited, opt for paint that does not necessitate an extra topcoat or wax for sealing. For this job, I used Sherwin Williams satin paint in Alabaster. Since I needed only a small quantity, I bought a sample size container (which also saved money!:)).

Update!! Even though this dresser painted beautifully with the Sherwin Williams sample paint, the top stained severely. I suggest that if using this paint, you thoroughly seal the top with a clear coat sealer.

4.Detach the drawers (and their handles) and paint everything except the top surface.

5.After the frame and sides are painted, lay an old towel over the clothes inside the dresser (to prevent paint drips), reinsert the drawers staggered, and then paint the drawer fronts. Finally, paint the top last.

Monitor for drips, yet ensure you apply sufficient paint so you can draw your brush completely across the wood while the paint remains wet.

Apply multiple layers of paint until the dresser is completely covered, allowing sufficient drying time between each application.

Because the stencil design was quite deep in color, the drawer faces required three coats.

Between applying the paint coats, I used a spray paint finish in Oil Rubbed Bronze on the existing hardware.

Within only a short span of time, the dresser transformed from its initial appearance:
