Refresh your dated bathroom with budget-friendly ideas—including a painted feature wall in Sherwin-Williams Evergreen Fog.
A straightforward ceiling repair turned into a full bathroom refresh this summer. One small project led to another, and before we knew it the main bathroom looked completely renewed without a full renovation.
With full bathroom remodels costing thousands, we chose a budget-friendly route focused on updating the most visible elements while keeping the existing tub/shower, toilet, vanity, and flooring. Thoughtful cosmetic updates can dramatically change a room’s appearance without replacing major fixtures.
This is how the bathroom looked after the ceiling issue was repaired and some of the textured stipple was scraped away:

Functionally the layout and large vanity worked well, but aesthetically the space felt dated. The dark beige paint, the oversized mirror, and the light fixtures made the room look heavier than it needed to be.

The mirror and lighting were two of our least favorite features, and the wall color made the whole room feel closed in. We focused on changes that would deliver the biggest visual impact for the least expense.
And here is the space now, after the updates:

What we changed and why it made a difference:
- Faux shiplap ceiling: After encountering complications with scraping the ceiling stipple, we installed faux shiplap over the repaired ceiling. This added texture and architectural interest without the cost of a full ceiling replacement. Because the ceiling studs didn’t provide a straightforward attachment, we temporarily used construction adhesive and bracing while it cured to secure the boards.
- Fresh neutral base paint: We first painted the room in a crisp white (Chantilly Lace by Benjamin Moore) to brighten the space and create a clean backdrop. The bright white helped us evaluate how the room would feel with more contrast.
- Feature wall in Evergreen Fog: To introduce color and warmth without overwhelming the room, we painted a single feature wall in Sherwin-Williams Evergreen Fog. The muted green-gray tone anchors the vanity wall and changes the whole mood of the bathroom.
- Updated vanity hardware and lighting: Installing a new mirror, modern light fixtures, a fresh faucet, and new drawer pulls updated the vanity area and made it feel intentional and cohesive.
- Soft, layered accessories: A Turkish towel shower curtain, plush rugs, and a faux plant on the windowsill soften the room and make it feel relaxing. Tip: hang your shower curtain as high as practical—raising it even a few inches creates the illusion of taller ceilings and more space.

More about Evergreen Fog paint color
Choosing paint colors can be challenging because lighting dramatically changes how a shade reads in a room. Test paint samples on the actual wall and observe them at different times of day. Evergreen Fog (Sherwin-Williams’ 2022 color of the year) is a versatile, soft green-gray that can appear cooler or warmer depending on the light and surrounding finishes.
When used as an accent or feature wall, Evergreen Fog brings a gentle color presence without overpowering white fixtures and natural materials. If you’re unsure, try a small painted section first or use sample boards to see how it performs in morning, midday, and evening light.

Bathroom sources and shopping notes
Disclosure: Some items used in this refresh were purchased through retail partners.
We sourced many supplies locally at Home Depot and found affordable fixtures, lighting, and hardware that fit the budget. For textiles and finishing touches—shower curtains, rugs, and decor—look for quality materials that elevate the room without high expense. Neutral linens, natural textures, and a few brass or matte black accents can modernize a space quickly.
When buying paint, purchase a small sample first and test it directly on the wall. For lighting and mirrors, choose pieces that reflect the style you want—rounded mirrors and layered lighting create a softer, more curated look than large frameless mirrors.
