Effortless Carry On Packing Guide for Travel

Avoid the weight of a large suitcase by mastering carry-on packing for your next trip.

It is wonderful that travel is accessible once more!

However, I have noted that flight industry staffing issues are causing unusual problems like cancelled flights, missed connections, and lost luggage.

An Instagram friend traveling to France for a 3-day work trip still has her baggage stuck in Seattle!

This reminded me of an older post I wrote; traveling solely with a carry-on prevents significant trouble, just like the situation above. I find this method less stressful overall and have enhanced the advice with fresh tips; please share your own ideas in the comments.

I truly enjoy traveling, and after many years of trying carry-on-only, it is my preferred packing style.

Preparing a carry-on demands some foresight, but the benefit is huge—you won't haul around unnecessary items!

How to pack for an 8-day trip (or longer) using only a Carry-On Bag:

Note: This post includes affiliate links for your convenience when shopping.

1. Select appropriate luggage.

Opt for a durable, light carry-on that meets airline size rules; strong, smoothly rolling wheels are crucial. I sometimes place a secondary bag inside the main carry-on for post-shopping purchases.

My current bag is a London Fog softside, and it travels perfectly! Even though it expands, I avoid expanding it to ensure it fits in the overhead bin.

Remember you can also bring a personal item, like a purse or laptop bag, with your carry-on; confirm your airline's size rules. I selected a sizable handbag similar to this one.

2. Utilize the space beneath the zipper area of the suitcase.

If your bag resembles mine, there are metal rods at the base covered by a zipper across the bottom. I maximize every bit of space, as there is much room under that zipper! I tuck socks, camisoles, and underwear between the rods.

Placing these items at the bottom prevents my undergarments from spilling out if the suitcase is inspected at the airport—how awkward would that be?

3. Fold an extra shopping bag and position it over the zippered section.

If your holiday involves buying souvenirs, packing an extra bag is wise.

This extra bag serves as your carry-on on the return flight, which you can check; a slight delay upon arrival is usually not a major issue.

When laid flat, this extra bag forms the new base of your carry-on.

4. Choose versatile, mix-and-match clothing that layers well.

Your clothing selection depends on your destination's weather, naturally. I prefer items that are comfortable and combine easily to create diverse looks.

I recently found some very useful compression packing cube collections; they help squeeze items together and zip them tightly, keeping your luggage tidy for my upcoming journey.

5. Select the largest clothing item to wear on the plane.

I prefer wearing a sweater, scarf, and boots (if it is winter) on flights; this gives me warmth options for any drafts and saves suitcase space by wearing my bulkier gear.

Furthermore, I avoid wearing big jewelry or belts when passing through airport security because having to remove them in line feels a bit awkward!

6. Place all liquids in a clear, accessible bag, and keep your vital paperwork handy too!

Airline regulations regarding liquid limits for carry-ons can vary, so always confirm with your specific carrier; makeup and hair products can quickly use up your allowance, making travel-sized options or buying items at your destination wise.

Remember to keep your passport and travel information in your purse, along with your toothbrush, which I use frequently.

7. Reconsider packing your blow dryer.

My blow dryer is quite large, so I sometimes leave it behind; if staying with family or if the hotel provides a complimentary dryer, I skip bringing mine.

8. Keep jewelry in a dedicated bag to prevent it from getting mixed up!

I generally don't pack extensive jewelry, but what I do bring goes into its own separate pouch.

A jewelry packing trick I learned from working in a store is to let necklace ends hang slightly outside the zipper; this prevents tangling.

9. Bring snacks and entertainment.

I tuck a few granola bars and a good book into my carry-on's exterior pocket; being ready to relax with reading is smart, or pre-download movies, shows, or podcasts onto your device.

With the emphasis on recycling, fast-food places sometimes offer paper straws and wooden spoons; if you dislike chili with a popsicle spoon, consider adding a travel utensil set to your purse.

I applied this packing strategy during trips to Maui, Georgia, and while visiting family in Montana.
