Sometimes life hands you a tight deadline that becomes the best motivation. When my sister and I finally arranged time together, we realized we had exactly seven days to tackle her struggling kitchen—seven days to organize, refresh, and make meaningful changes that would improve how the space looked and functioned.
We live 793.9 miles apart (plus an ocean), so I’m not usually available to help in person. Still, after months of conversations about what wasn’t working in her kitchen, we carved out time during my visit specifically for a focused, week-long makeover.
We treated our visit like a project with a fixed deadline and applied simple design and organization principles to get the biggest impact in the shortest time.
Here’s How We Tackled Making Over a Kitchen in just 7 Days:
Start by defining the problems.
Before buying paint or accessories, we spent time talking through what worked and what didn’t. Everything boiled down to two essential issues: function—how the kitchen worked for everyday life—and form—how the space looked and felt.
- Function:

and 2. Form (appearance):

Organize first—then make it pretty.
Although we were eager to jump into the “pretty stuff,” we focused first on improving how the kitchen functioned. Organization is the foundation of any successful kitchen makeover: if you can’t find what you need, it doesn’t matter how beautiful the room is.
We emptied every cupboard, drawer, pantry, and hutch. Laying every single item out on the living room floor let us see what we had and make clear decisions about what to keep, donate, or discard.

Working one category at a time, I asked my sister to choose what she truly used and loved. I gave her permission to let go of duplicate gadgets, rarely used serving pieces, and anything that didn’t fit her daily routine.

Once decisions were made, we boxed donations immediately and returned keepers to the cupboards in logical, easy-to-reach groupings. The result: more breathing room inside the cabinets and a calmer, more usable kitchen.
Keep momentum and work with the deadline.
Having only a week created a natural urgency that helped us avoid overthinking. We scheduled tasks each day and focused on one thing at a time—decluttering, cleaning, painting, and styling—taking short breaks but always moving toward the final reveal.
Be flexible—adjust the plan when needed.
By day four it became clear we wouldn’t finish every possible improvement. We reprioritized: which changes would make the biggest difference now, and which projects could be completed later by my sister and brother-in-law? For example, we had a plan to convert an underused closet beside the fridge into an appliance garage with shelving, but I ran out of time and energy. My brother-in-law agreed to take that on after I left.

Prioritizing practical changes versus ambitious projects allowed us to complete a meaningful makeover within seven days while leaving a clear plan for future improvements.
Plan the aesthetic updates thoughtfully.
Not every kitchen remodel requires contractors, new flooring, or plumbing work. For this budget-friendly update we focused on paint, textiles, and well-chosen accessories to refresh the style without a major renovation. After organizing the cupboards and creating more functional storage, we removed an outdated wallpaper border and an awkward upper cabinet, rolled on fresh paint, and selected a new rug and curtains to pull everything together.

These simple updates—paired with thoughtful organization—transformed the space into a kitchen that looks better and functions far more effectively for her family.
In just seven days the project went from messy and underused to neat, refreshed, and easier to live in. If you’re planning a short, budget-conscious kitchen makeover, focus first on organization, set realistic priorities, and save any larger built-in projects for a later phase.
