Create chalk paint texture and finish using this baking soda paint recipe!
I had been eager to experiment with baking soda paint for quite a while, and I finally got the opportunity when I chose to refresh an old dark picture frame.
Producing chalk paint with baking soda turned out to be incredibly simple, and the finished result perfectly matched my expectations!

Creating Chalk-Style Paint with Baking Soda
Essential Items Required:
- Remaining interior paint (acrylic, water-based)
- Baking Soda
- A mixing vessel – I prefer utilizing a disposable container, such as a yogurt pot.
- Mixing implement
- Measuring vessel – I repurposed a disposable yogurt container for measurement. I avoided using my standard baking measurements!
Instructions for Creating Your Own Baking Soda Chalk-Style Paint
Formula for producing sufficient baking soda paint to refresh a substantial picture frame:
- Two-thirds of a cup of acrylic water-based house paint (I opted for Simply White)
- One-third of a cup baking soda
- One and a half tablespoons of cool water to achieve a smooth, non-gritty consistency while maintaining thickness (begin with a small amount and increase as required)
Initial Step: Within a disposable plastic vessel, combine one portion acrylic house paint with one-half portion baking soda until the mixture is smooth. For this sizeable picture frame, I incorporated two-thirds of a cup of Simply White latex wall coating with one-third of a cup baking soda.
Secondary Step: After the baking soda and paint are blended, incorporate sufficient cool water to attain a smooth, non-gritty paint texture. (I measured out one and a half tablespoons of cool water.) You desire the paint to be thick enough to cover effectively, yet not so liquid that it drips from the brush. Begin with a small amount and mix thoroughly. If required to improve application, add additional increments gradually.

I logged this DIY craft endeavor across my Instagram story channels. If you overlooked them previously, here is footage demonstrating how I combined baking soda paint and applied it to the pictured frame:
Guidelines for Applying Homemade Baking Soda Paint
Once the paint is thoroughly combined, utilize a paintbrush to spread it across the surface you are treating. The paint dries rapidly, facilitating the addition of further layers to reach the preferred appearance you aim for.
If aiming for a weathered or vintage aesthetic, gently wipe away some paint using a moist cloth or sandpaper to expose the underlying shade. (I previously applied gold spray paint to the frame before adding the homemade chalk-style coating.)
This paint variety can be employed to modernize obsolete home decor pieces like picture frames and vases.
Should you desire more precise instructions on how to paint and distress a picture frame, I suggest this piece titled "Chalk Painting and Distressing a Frame." This is the guide I adhered to when I treated the frame displayed above.
Can you keep baking soda paint for later?
Similar to other paints, store it in a sealed container somewhere cool; nevertheless, certain paint types might solidify and become unusable, so it is better to mix only what you need right away.
Reasons to use this baking soda paint mix
- If chalk paint isn't readily available in your area, crafting your own homemade chalk paint using baking soda is quite handy!
- It is economical since it utilizes surplus house paint and baking soda.
- Transforming older items like vases and picture frames with homemade chalk paint offers a wonderful way to give dated decor a fresh, modern appearance.
- Much like chalk paint, this baking soda paint has a subtle texture, ensuring strong adherence to the surface without requiring a paint primer.
