Sunny Days Against a Gray Backdrop

Blue Skies After Gray: A West Coast Reflection

Anyone who has lived on the West Coast knows that winter often brings long stretches of gray skies. It’s part of the landscape—soft light, low clouds, and the steady rhythm of rain. Those gray days shape routines, moods, and how we see the world.

But on some mornings recently, the clouds cleared and we woke to this:

mountain

Deep, breathtaking blue skies. The mountains capped in white, sunlight dancing on the water—moments that make you pause. Photography rarely captures exactly how vivid those scenes feel in person, but even a simple photograph can hint at the way light and color lift the spirit.

As I stood watching the light catch the peaks and the sea, I found myself thinking about weather and how it mirrors life. The gray days matter. Without them, the sunny ones would lose their brilliance.

If we never had gray days, we wouldn’t know how much we value blue-sky mornings. If we never experienced sorrow, we wouldn’t recognize joy. Light becomes more visible against the backdrop of darkness—this contrast is essential.

Photography illustrates that truth well: the tension between light and shadow gives a picture depth and meaning. So it is with life. We would all choose sunshine over clouds, but the overcast moments are often the ones that shape our character. They challenge us to make difficult choices, teach patience, and invite empathy. Gray days prompt growth, cultivate gratitude, and remind us of our dependence on something greater than ourselves.

True contentment and durable joy aren’t only found on bright days; they can be discovered even during storms. For many people, faith provides steadying perspective and comfort—an anchor when seasons of life are uncertain.

There’s an old hymn that captures this idea:

“God hath not promised skies always blue, flower-strewn pathways, all the day through,

path

God hath not promised sun without rain, joy without sorrow, peace without pain.”

But the hymn continues:

“…strength for the day, rest for the labor, light for the way, grace for the trials, help from above.”

Whether your local forecast is gray or bright today, I hope you find a moment to notice the sky. If you’re under clouds, take heart: contrast makes the sunny days even more meaningful. If you’re basking in blue, breathe deeply and be grateful for the clarity and light.

Here on the coast, I’m grateful for this blue sky and for the reminder that joy can coexist with sorrow, and that small moments of beauty—mountains, sea, sunlight—reveal deeper truths about resilience and gratitude.

Take time today to appreciate the light, whatever the weather brings.
