Are you on the lookout for friends?

I began praying for friends long ago, and I still ask God to bring the right people across my path. I’m not someone who needs a huge social circle; a few faithful, intentional friends are enough for me. When those friendships arrive, they enrich life in ways that matter most: support in hard times, laughter in the good ones, and honest counsel when decisions loom.

Over the years God has provided friends for many seasons of my life. Some relationships are seasonal and naturally come and go, and that’s okay. Other friendships become steadfast—people who stay through changes and challenges. One such friend entered my life decades ago. Age didn’t matter then, and it doesn’t now. Still, our birthdates tell me she’s about ten years older than I am, and I’m continually inspired by how much energy and insight she brings—she can practically run circles around me!

She came into my life at a time when I was searching for meaningful connection, and our friendship developed naturally. Over the years she’s taught me countless life lessons simply through her example and the way she lives. In this episode I share one of those lessons about friendship that has stayed with me.

Parts of this podcast episode:

There are three types of friends you should strive to have in your life. Each offers something valuable and distinct:

  • A friend younger than you: Younger friends bring fresh perspective, energy, and often new ideas or modern approaches you might not have considered. They remind you to stay curious, flexible, and open to learning.
  • A peer friend: A peer is someone near your age or stage of life who understands the unique pressures and joys you’re facing. Peer friends offer empathy, solidarity, and practical companionship—people you can navigate life’s ups and downs with in real time.
  • A friend older than you: Older friends bring experience, perspective, and tested wisdom. They can speak truth gently, model faithful living, and help you see the long view. Their guidance often saves you time and heartache.

Each of these relationships matters. Together they balance your social and spiritual life—encouraging growth, offering accountability, and providing joy. In the episode I talk about how these three types of friends have shown up in my life and practical ways to pursue and cultivate each kind of relationship.
