Celebrate Joel’s Graduation: A Day to Remember

We Did It! Celebrating a Memorable Graduation

On Saturday we celebrated our second son’s graduation — a milestone that still feels surreal. The weather cooperated, the evening unfolded smoothly, and the whole event felt thoughtful and personal. As someone who helped style the venue, I wanted to share how the gym looked after we finished decorating it in an “Old England” theme for the graduation banquet.

Venue and Theme: Old England Charm

The gym transformed into a warm, charming space with twinkling lights, classic colors, and vintage-inspired details. The overall effect was elegant without feeling overly formal — perfect for a graduation banquet where families gather to celebrate and take photos.

Photo Corner and Family Portraits

We set up a dedicated photo corner for family portraits with the graduates. Having a designated space helped the photographer work efficiently and ensured families had a beautiful backdrop for keepsake pictures. The corner reflected the overall theme with props and soft lighting to capture memorable shots.

Decor Details: Centerpieces and Props

Every table featured a centerpiece with a photo of the graduate, making it easy for families to find their seats and adding a personal touch to each place setting. Small details like name cards, themed accents, and soft candlelight helped elevate the dining experience without overshadowing the purpose of the evening — celebrating student achievement.

Creative Touches: Disguised Washrooms and a Telephone Booth

We incorporated playful elements that fit the theme, such as cleverly disguised washroom doors and a handcrafted phone booth built by one of the graduates and her father. These additions created visual interest and gave guests fun places to pose for photos, contributing to the atmosphere without detracting from the ceremony.

Beverage Station and Social Flow

The punch table was a social hub throughout the long evening. By positioning refreshments in a central spot, guests naturally mingled and reconnected, which helped keep energy levels up and created a convivial atmosphere between formal portions of the program.

Graduation Ceremony and a Memorable Message

I don’t recall much from my own graduation speeches, but one line from this ceremony stuck with me. The speaker — a beloved teacher of our boys — encouraged the graduates to “be people of extremes.” He explained that being “hot” can mean offering warmth and healing, like a restorative hot spring, while being “cold” can mean providing clarity and refreshment, like a cool mountain spring.

That contrast is a powerful way to think about how we interact with others: strive to be either healing or refreshing through our words and actions. It’s a simple, respectful challenge to be intentional about the kind of influence we have on the people around us.

Final Thoughts

Watching our son and his classmates mark this transition was full of gratitude and pride. The event combined careful planning, heartfelt personal touches, and meaningful moments — from the themed decorations to the speaker’s closing advice. Celebrations like this are a reminder of community, creativity, and the small details that make milestones memorable.
