Knowing where to begin is often the hardest step in a room makeover. These mood boards will help guide the transformation of a farmhouse-style townhouse living and dining room.

It’s Week 3 of the One Room Challenge, and today I’m sharing the inspiration and mood boards that will shape our farmhouse-style townhouse living and dining room makeover.

I admit I feel a little behind, but creative projects often take time to find their direction. If you missed parts 1 and 2 of this One Room Challenge, here’s a quick catch-up so the story makes sense.
The Very Beginning:
My husband and I bought our first home nearly two years ago: a cozy 1,250-square-foot townhouse located in town. From day one I wanted the space to reflect both our lifestyle and a comfortable, lived-in aesthetic.

The Before:
Shortly after moving in I dove into decorating. My first One Room Challenge kicked off a week after we arrived, focusing on paint, rearranging existing furniture, and adding storage like the Ikea Billy bookcase system to organize the living and dining area.

Those early updates helped, and for the most part the layout and look have stayed the same since then.

The Now:
Recently a practical decision pushed me to rethink the whole space: it’s time to replace our faithful old sofa. That decision felt bigger than just furniture shopping. Choosing the right style, size, color, and material for a townhouse living and dining area that balances farmhouse charm with an urban setting felt overwhelming.

I couldn’t settle on a direction. Every option brought new questions: should the sofa be luxe or relaxed, neutral or patterned, deep-sitting or sculpted? I felt stuck and indecisive — and that’s when a helpful designer entered the picture.
I connected with Melissa from The Farmhouse Native’s Coop design service. She listened to my ideas, frustrations, and hopes for the room, and then sent something that felt like it came from my own design instincts translated into a clear plan.
The Inspiration Boards for the One Room Challenge
The mood boards she created distilled the vision: a modern farmhouse influence layered into a townhouse footprint, with warm neutrals, textured fabrics, classic woods, and simple, welcoming decor. These inspiration boards map out color palettes, furniture styles, and key accents that will give the living and dining room both character and cohesion.

Seeing these collages was a relief and an inspiration. The ideas felt authentic to my taste: not overly rustic, but infused with farmhouse warmth — soft linens, woven textures, classic silhouettes, and a calming neutral base with subtle color accents. It’s a direction that suits townhouse living while bringing in the relaxed, layered look I love.
Using these mood boards as a roadmap makes decision-making simpler. They’ll guide choices for the new sofa, accent chairs, rugs, lighting, and small decorative touches that tie the living and dining spaces together. The boards also help prioritize what to tackle first and how to balance budget with impact.

Over the next weeks I’ll be sharing updates as we select the sofa, choose finishes, and add the finishing touches that will bring this farmhouse-style townhouse living and dining room to life. Thanks for joining me on this One Room Challenge — I can’t wait to see how these inspiration boards translate into the finished space.
